Checking Transmission Fluid Level

Hi,
Dealer tells me that it should be checked when the engine is running and hot. Local oil change place says it should be checked when the engine is not running and is cold. Who is right?

When engine not runing and is cold, the level is below the low level marker hole. I would think it is too low...dealer says it is not.

Thanks for your help in advance.

check the manual...I believe you are supposed to have the engine hot but off - most cars the engine should be on, but not this car.

ou sig is right. The level should be checked when the engine is off and in normal operating temp. I had my ATF changed yesterday and my friend mechanic was checking it with the engine turned on (which is for most cars). The level was over the limit and I told him that the manual says "check with the engine off." When he first checked it with the engine on he was shock because he knew that he only drained 3 qts and put in the same amount.

Not everybody has a manual specially for those that bought their car used. Why spend $35+ on a manual if you can get all your answers and more here in the forum

In other words, people who have enough money to buy a car like a used TL are too cheap to spend $35 on an Owner's Manual.

yes check it when it's off, and 3 qts is not enough, 3.5 qts would be gd

I won't call it cheap...I would rather call it smart buying. That's why we all own a TL

Are you sure about this because we did check it twice and it exactly on the second dot. I have a 99TL, is there a difference in the capacity because 99 are 4 speed?

Probably one of the smartest quotes I've ever seen here on AZ!
