Engine noise leaking into cabin after steering rack was replaced
Engine noise leaking into cabin after steering rack was replaced
'04 TL/navi:
Had the steering rack and both lower control arms replaced. When I picked the car up, I immediately noticed I could hear the engine mor eloudly, as if there was a hole in the firewall. The rubber boot over the steering knuckle on the inside of the car seems intact. Mechanic said everything looks ok. I know I am not crazy. Any ideas? It's definately coming from the driver's side but I can't pinpoint it...

Sometimes exhaust pipes have to be removed to change a rack. Were all the exhaust pipe connections re-tightened with the pipes in the same positions they were in before the rack was changed? Start the car and use your ear or a stethoscope to listen for noise sources. Check all the covers in the engine area, especially by the firewall. Was the steering column moved? If so, were its seals all replaced correctly? These are the things I would check. Hope this helps. Hy
I found this thread while searching for something else but I have the exact same issue after having my power-steering rack replaced. I can hear valvetrain noise through the left HVAC vent. It's annoying the crap out of me.
