Having issues with the climate control in my 05 TL and with the summer heat coming soon I want to take care of this as soon as I can.
I can hear the sound of rushing air whenever I run the climate control, but get barely any pressure out of ANY of the vents. Sounds like all the air is just blowing around inside the dash (near the center, behind the navi). The little air that I do get is hot/cold depending on the settings however. The blower motor seemed to run fine (based on how loud the sound of the air was) but I replaced that and the resistor and nothing improved. Since I had stuff partially apart anyway, I started poking around and looked behind the radio to see that the main foam gasket that connected the lower part of the climate control system (where the flaps that divert the air depending on the mode live) is totally disintegrated, along with most of the other foam tape/gaskets connecting the vents/tubes that make up the climate control. For now though, I just put everything back together to come up with how to tackle this. I went ahead and ordered some foam gasket tape of different sizes, as well as more of a 'sheet' to hopefully make the main gasket.
I guess the point of this post is to pose the question of: has this been done before? When I had an '04 land rover discovery, I found that some of that same foam tape was falling apart so I replaced it with some regular foam window seal tape you'd use on a house, but that was not nearly as bad as here on my TL. It seems obvious to me that this gasket is the issue, with the loud blowing sound but weak air flow, but my research here found nobody with the same issue or a fix. I know that taking the dash off is a huge PITA, so if anyone wants to swoop in and tell me not to do it and there's a miracle fix, now would be the time : )
Located in Midwest USA FWIW, but the car is originally from Florida (not sure when it left there, I've had it since 2016)
I neglected to get a photo of the gasket, and I could only see a small portion of the gasket, but here's one from another post I found on here. Basically all of the gray foam tape you can see around the black hvac ductwork in the center of the vehicle is toast. Just dry rotted away into nothing. Since I started poking around I noticed a few little gray bits of foam around the car now too haha. Thanks!
