Check engine light is blinking, car is chugging.

I turned my car on to let it warm up this morning (it's cold out if that helps), and when I came back out 10 minutes later, my car was making a loud chugging noise from the exhaust. It was also shaking a bit. I looked at my gauge cluster, and sure enough, my check engine light was on, but it was blinking steadily. I put fuel in it yesterday, but I'm sure it was 91 octane- unless the gas station somehow fucked up and gave me 85.

It's gotta be a misfire, right? If so, what's that cost to fix? I literally ran out of money yesterday so I'm gonna have to call in a few favors, so I hope it's not expensive.

we literally dont know whats going on.
the check engine light is a MAJOR KEY! or clue to help you figure out whats going on.
you'll need to limp the vehicle to an auto parts store and ask them to check the check engine light with an OBDII reader.
once you have the code, it'll be in the form of P0xxx, report back here and we can figure whats wrong, together

be sure to notate the code, so that we have a clear idea of whats going on

Thanks for the quick response. My friend has an OBDII plug for his computer that I'll try to borrow. I'll deliver the news once I get the plug.

awesome! that's even better! as the auto parts store generally tries to hawk things at you.

but yeah, if you could borrow the OBDII or even just use it for like 5 secs, you'll be golden!

Maybe EGR valve needs a to be cleaned of carbon deposits? Most definitely need to run codes. I've had the same problem and it came out of no where, ran codes, and said something about the EGR valve. Took the valve out, sure enough there were bits and pieces of carbon, I just hit it up with brake cleaner, a wire brush and unpluged the battery after i've reinstalled it, and voila!! Runs perfect again.
