Check Engine light

Hi, I have a 2004 TL AT that has about 56k on it now which also means its out of warranty. My check engine light came on a couple of days ago so I took it to auto zone and did a diagnostic and it said something about a catalytic issue, i think it said misflow, so I erased the code hoping it was just an error. Well today the light came back on! The car drives perfect and I have felt no change in performance. What can the problem be? Before I take it to Acura and them hitting me with an outrageous price!

Emission Control devices may be covered longer, especially if CT requires Northeast Emissions standards by manufacturers. Read your warranty booklet, it's likely covered for 8 years/80,000 miles.

emission warranty covers the cat and any part failure that would cause the car to not pass smog test is covered to 80k miles, not sure if time limited
Call acura and ask= register the problem -1-800-382-2238 x5
they are just phone people so dont expect answers of a technical nature

When you get a code like that- leave it alone- acura needs the car to tell it whats been happening
Their scanner is way better than zones and reads more things- so let it tell them!
These warning lights come on for a reason!!!!

Giving us the zone code would help a lot! Codes are CLUES not diagnosis
so dont buy a cat because it says low flow
Maybe the egr ports need to be cleaned is all

Go to acura

Yeah Thanks a lot I dropped off my Car at Acura Today and they called me back a while later telling me that is was in fact the Catalytic converter and it was covered under the emissions warranty which goes up to 80k. So now they ordered me the parts and there replacing it under warranty. Thanks to millarduck and acurazine I got it fixed for no cost to me.

Lucky you, I am screwed because I have 103k miles. I asked how much to fix they said 1400 at stealership and about 700 at the hole in the wall mechanic.

if you know which cat it is, you can buy a test pipe (if its the 3rd cat) or some pre-cat deletes. Basically you eliminate the problem cats for about 300 dollars and you get some nice extra power.

It won't be the 3rd cat. The computer has no awareness of the 3rd cat. There are no sensors for the 3rd cat. Us that have the testpipe in place of the 3rd cat never had a CEL.

I have also been having the check engine light come on for few days then cycle off for a week or so before it returns. My dealer today said the catalytic converter was slightly off and ordered the 1200$ part under warranty. Car is on 04 TL with only 42K miles so I was surprised at the failure. However, glad it's under warranty!

2000tl - have you had the car in for the diagnosis, or are you just going of the CEL? only reason I ask is that at 103K miles you could have a dead o2 sensor they usually can go around then. Just a thought.

My check engine light just came on the other day but it drives fine. I won't have time to bring the car in until next weekend. Will I harm the car by driving it for a week assuming it's the cats? BTW - I have aftermarket precats from Excellerate...will that change anything (besides the dealership not covering it under warranty)?

emissions are covered for 80k, if not we have vendors who can provide aftermarket alternatives.

I assume procats, there was an issue with some of those prematurely failing. warranty will def not cover any emissions if they were tampered with.

When did you install the new parts? Sometimes a spacer on the O2 sensor is needed
Call Josh- Excelerate and tell him what codes you got
Dont clear codes- they are clues!! and dont show up for no reason at all~

check engine light could be anything, it just means time to get the codes read and report back here
Drive to the parts store first~~~before you go anywhere
