Check Engine Cap warning?

I was driving on the freeway today when suddenly I hear a "bing" from the car computer and the "Check Gas Cap" warning comes on. I stop and tighten the gas cap (which was tight). The warning light was still on so I turned off the engine then unscrewed the gas cap and put it back on tightly (turned it two times with it clicking) just to make sure. The warning light is still on.

I called Acura Service and have an appointment for Saturday. The car seems to run fine but I'm wondering what could be causing this warning light to go off? Do you think I can gas up as I'm close to empty and need to drive! Any thoughts?

Mmm, that's a feature the 2G didn't have, but the underlying principles are the same. The system is detecting a leak in the evap system. If the gas cap is fine, then you might have a leak somewhere else and the computer can't distinguish.

I guess you'll find out for sure once you take it to the dealership. Good luck.

this issue has been addressed before, drive around for a little while to see if the light goes off. i dont think you need to go to the dealer unless it wont go off. read the section in the owners manual

You have to wait for the light to go off. It wont go off right away after you secure the gas cap. Make sure you get 3 clicks. It should go off after you used a full tank of gas and refuel. Dont go to the dealer cause they will just tell you what we would tell you. If it stays on after the first or second refuel then you should go to the dealer

a quick way to check if it is just a minor issue is to disconnect the battery for a few minutes, that usually turns off a gas cap error, if it is still there, then you may have some more serious issues that need to be dealt with!

Just an update: I filled up my tank but the "Check Gas Cap" error light still was on. I drove around a little more that day but not much. At about 2 AM the next morning (late poker night), I got into my car to go home and the "Check Gas Cap" error light was gone! I've been driving for the past few days with no error light so all seems fine. I guess filling up the tank fixed the problem? I'm crossing my fingers.

Filling the tank had nothing to do with the warning light going off. What did the trick was two things:1) Securing the fuel cap properly, and 2) several on-off cycles of the ignition. Time heals a lot of ills.

Sensor

this is probably a faulty censor or switch. You can definatly gas up and drive. But you should find out if their is a code locked in the computer that needs to be deleted, or if its a bad sensor/switch.
