Car suddenly won't start

My gas tank was on empty. I made it to the gas station just in time. Rode home, went in the house for five minutes, came back out to start car and the car suddenly would not start. The battery is one month old, the lights, radio etc are working. When I turn the key I hear a faint humming sound for a few seconds then nothing. Any ideas?

If you run the fuel tank really low it can suck in a lot of gunk into the fuel motor or filter causing it to no longer be able to supply fuel to the car.

Does the car turnover but not start?

Yes, it does turnover but not start. I noticed that the key is flashing on the dashboard as soon as I insert the key into the ignition. Is it possible that there is a problem with the key. I may have put it against something magnetic (if this can cause the key to stop working).

if it does turn over but not start its more than likely one of three things.

1.)fuel issue, which sounds more likely than the other two

2.)spark issue

3.)air issue

If you know for a fact your starter is engaging and the motor is turning over but not starting, then you are not getting the proper fuel/air/spark mixture to start the motor. Like stated before, if you run the tank down to low you run the chance of ruining the fuel filter and/or damaging the fuel pump. Id check fuel pressure and report back.

If all those above fail, it may very well be your crank sensor.

To clear if it's the fuel or not

Tell us how low was the tank. Where was the needle exactly? Or how many gal the tank took.
