A/C Compressor Burnt out?!
My A/C stopped working today... The air went from being ice cold to warm in a matter of seconds.
Right before it malfunctioned... I smelt burning rubber and saw smoke coming from the right side of the car. After switching off the A/C and popping the hood I noticed little bits of burnt rubber (or plastic) on the frame of the car under the compressor. Now every time I turn on the A/C the air awfully warm and there's a loud screeching noise. The serpentine belt looks old but doesn't look damaged.
I called Acura and got a quote of ~$900 to replace the compressor. ($350 for labor and $550 for a compressor and 2lbs of freon)
My questions are...
1) Is the compressor burnt out or is the source of the issue another part?
2) Could I purchase a Denso compressor from the website below and have the dealer install it?
http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/200...ompressor.html
Not sure if it matters but I drive a 07 TL-s with 75K 6spd
Thanks

compressor seized and toasted the clutch? I would see if they are willing to pick up part of the repair on that if you have been a good customer

^ Dealer may not want to install used parts but if they do, no waranty...

^that's not bad, I Just paid $400 to have my condensor and receiver/dryer replaced.
The parts on that build are $500 for compressor and $210 for clutch

Did the dealer specifically state that the compressor is seized? or 'burned-out'? or exactly how its damaged?
You may wish to at least read the MDX TSB 11-031 concerning how a bad A/C clutch relay (stuck-on) can cause the clutch itself to constantly run, and the compressor to vent all the Freon, obviously causing the system to no longer provide cold air.
