atf leak on my 06

tried search but didn't find other threads on it.

I've got 27500 miles on my 06 auto. decided to do a drain and refill of ATF yesterday, and I took off the splash guard under tranny. glad I did so and I found some ATF leak there, seems to me it has been quite a while, there are some fluid dripped onto the splash guard but has dried out and covered by sand like dirts. on the tranny itself some dirts along a vertical gasket at rear corner, I think it's the gasket between torque converter and transmission body. there the dirts are fine and have a little more wet looking, but no liquid.

I've scheduled an appoinment with dealer on Wednesday. but would like to know whether someone else had this problem or any idea whether it's serious. I wiped clean a section along the gasket and will check again to see whether there would be more leak. unfortunately I didn't check fluid level before I drained the ATF

If it's not fresh fluid, probably somone spilled some during a change or service. There is no gasket between the torque converter and trans body.

Here's a picture of a /C:

I service my car myself. only fluid that can possibly go there is brake fluid, that I did first time on friday, while the leak I observed on tranny body, is kind of old. and I can see the dirts go along the gasket -- #005, torque converter gasket here:

That's a case gasket. I would think that the only fluid that would penetrate that gasket would be through a front seal leak where the torque converter is installed on the trans shaft as it's not a gasket to contain fluid.
Clean it up and see if any new fluid is found in the future.

I also just completed my trans flush last week on my 05 A/T and upon pulling the splash guard found some old fluid with dirt it on the bottom of the case. This was the first flush of anything. I have changed the oil but that is it no brake jobs yet. I was thinking it could be a case seal as well. I am calling acura this week to get it looked at under warranty, I have a month left. Any thoughts.

Turbonut, thanks for the pointer. I would ask service people whether it means another internal leak.

k9lovr, it sounds seem as mine? I could see dirts on the guard and along the gasket. I accelerate aggressively and often rev to 5-6k. maybe this makes things worse

I also saw it on the guard as well as along the seem. I have not accelerated my car the the 5-6K range very often so I would not see that as a cause. I am going to take it in I stated to have it at least noted in my service record, that way when if it does start to leak more it should be covered under warranty.

Seep out the case is not uncommon from the rear main seal or T/C seal. If the dealer suggests resealing the T/C / rear main seal.. it will be very expensive (almost half the price of a new A/T). My trans guy says don't worry about. If there is a lot of dried ATF running from the case down the back and some of it looks fresh you'll want to get a detailed inspection.

Post up some pics if you have any.. but again.. you shouldn't worry about it. Just do regular ATF changes.

I took a look at various of figures I can find. although the gasket is named torque converter case gasket, it's on the other side of T/C and seals AT gears. the leak I observed is around differential I think. will take some pictures tomorrow before I send it in on Wednesday. I don't think the leak is bad though, never had problem with shifting nor any warning lights on dashboard.

just came back from the dealership. they cleaned up the area and added dye to ATF and asked me to go back after 2-3 weeks, they will decide what to do then.

BTW, it's covered under warranty or my bill shows $0, but I saw their bill to acura and they are charging them $145 for the job. I guess they spent one whole hour trying to find out where's the leak

Update, I dropped off my car at the dealership on Tuesday, and got a call back today. They told me that they found the leak pulled it and while looking at it found some other "problems" so they are replacing the trans with a new one. Car has 42,xxx miles and the warranty is set to expire in 7 days. Thinking about adding an extended warranty at this point. Second Honda/acura to have a trans go at 40,000 miles....not good!
