I'm glad the dealer took care of you. Now get rid of the "lemon" and get a WDP TL-S.

Unhappy

I also had a problem with my transmission (automatic).
I purchased a 2004 CPO with 51,000 miles in June of 2006.
My TL tranny died last week at 105,600. The dealer stated I was out of warranty and a new transmission was $5,500.
This was unacceptable to me. I called Acura Customer Services and complained. To make a long story short-- Acura covered 90% of the total cost (which to them was $3,000). So I'm out of pocket $300.
Then the dealer said my motor mounts were bad and that's a $550 cost (which I tried but couldn't fight).

So I'm at 105,600 miles and I had to spend $900 to replace a transmission and motor mounts. I'm VERY DISAPPOINTED. I thought Honda automobiles were built better than this.

Next time I'll think twice about buying a Honda/Acura.

Why are you complaining? 106k miles on your tranny is good / better than avg than most mfg in my book. Acura covered 90% and you were way out of warranty.. that's good service in my book no matter how much lip service it required. Motor mounts are bound to go out (age & wear), they're a maintenance item. I'm sure your new or reman trans is warrantied for 3yrs / 36k miles.. enjoy the car for a few more years worry free.

btw.. when they replaced the mounts did they do the timing belt as well? It would be a shame if it wasn't done yet.

I'm complaining because this is the first car I've owned where I had to replace the tranny @ 100k. I've owned multiple Fords and Nissans without having these types of problems at this mileage.
I spent alot of money to purchase this car and I expected to have minimal problems with a 'well-built' Honda product. I fully understand mechanical things breakdown/wear-out but this should not of happened this soon on this car IMO.

The new tranny is warrantied for 3yr/36k.
They did not do the timing belt. The dealer which did this work is not my preferred dealer. I expect to have the timing belt done at some point this year. (I'm averaging 25k miles/year --mostly highway-- so it'll need it sooner rather than later.)

That's B.S. of your stealership to not do your T/B at 106k miles when they put in your transmission and new motor mounts.. Did you decline or did they not offer? If they didn't offer I expect they wanted to milk twice the labor on it. You don't want to blow your engine over a bad t/b or w/p, get your t/b tensioner replaced too.. I wouldn't let the car get past 107k before doing t/b & tune-up if I were you.

When you say wear out at 100k shouldn't happen with the TL... are you aware of the long history of poor transmission designs from Acura? You should look into an external ATF cooler and using a better ATF or in the least change your ATF (3x3) at least 2 times a year. The average person puts on 12k miles a year.. you double that.. you can't compare the actual life of a car to the mechanical life (ie. years vs. use)..

I definitely understand the frustration, but you are lucky.. and find a good shop to do your t/b.. a fair price for t/b + w/p + a/t is around $750.. and most of that is labor.

Thank you for the feedback....it's helpful.

I was not aware of the poor transmission designs from Acura....I guess I found out the hard way

I thought it made sense to do the timing belt with the tranny. They did not offer the service. When I brought up the timing belt replacement to my service rep at the dealer...he said the T/B replacement has nothing to do with the transmission and the T/B service is approx $1,200-$1,500. This is not my preferred dealer (but it was 4 miles from where my car broke down) so I'll definitely take my car someplace else for the T/B. thanks. again.

Their full of *ish. T/b requires to release side mount and support engine.. so if they replaced your engine mounts it would have been cake to do t/b. A majority of their labor is just getting access to the lower cover to remove crank pulley.

It would only have required them to remove drive belt, t/b cover and they would have full access. Impact gun to the crank pulley, simple swap of tensioner and w/p.. new belt.. cover it up, new drive belt and that's it. They do these jobs often so it's really cake to them.

Typical OE parts breakdown is:

T/B Tensioner: ~100
W/P: ~150
New Belts: ~70

so $1500 is outrageous!.. I'd effin complain to the point where labor is free.. talk to the service mgr. Tell them the service writer you spoke quoted you $1500 for t/b service when labor could have been tied in. Repeat what I mentioned above and they'll know you mean business.. I wouldn't take any b.s.. if that doesn't get anywhere then call corporate again.. aye.. what a headache.. I'd move fairly quickly though.. could take a while before any decision is made.. plus your availabilty to have it serviced.

getting back to the transmission.. their have been many methods used by Azine members that have extended life in the A/T. I think I read a member put in Amsoil ATD (not ATF) in his / her 2G TL and it ran 200k miles and that transmission was worst in design then the 3G. IHC uses ATD and has an Ext. ATF Cooler and I believe the thermal wear is much better than Z1 which breaksdown much faster, but ATD doesn't legally support Honda Products yet (at least not our Trannys).

when i was driving recently i was in D and pressed down on the accelerator at about 20mph and the rpm shot up to redline and nothing geared down it was like the car was in neutral...is this the start of tranny problems??? the fluid was just changed with amsoil atf...all of the shifts otherwise from this one time are smooth the car has 60500 miles right now...04 5AT

Yeah sounds like it.. unplug your battery and try to reset your ECU and see if it happens again. Also.. Honda strictly says not to use any other ATF besides HONDA, so I'm not saying that its the fluid, but take that for what its worth.

Raj is right, only oem fluid and tl's are notorious for hard shifting....
