Another blown transmission

The dealership confirmed it today. It started with that STUPID whining noise. It got worse today - took it into Lynnwood; hesitation to shift @ 4000 rpm (wouldn't shift until 4k) and the car redlined itself when I tried to accelerate onto the freeway (went up and down and then up and then down ). Can someone throw me suggestions in dealing with the $$$ aspect of this? I've done all my services @ the same dealership...hopefully that should give me some leverage. Advice please?

Yea, I'm interested in knowing the year of your TL as well. If its an 05, would you mind posting the last 6 digits of your VIN? I heard somewhere that the latter half of the 05 TLs were supposed to be transmission problem free, due to a change in design.

I don't think you'll have a problem getting a discounted replacement, especially with all the service records on hand.

Yeah I'm certain they can do a goodwill replacement for you if not call corporate office and tell them the situation.

Looking through your old threads, it seems like it had its share of problems before this.

OP has an '05 btw.

well maintained - transmission fluids religiously flushed...along with the other fluids. i also bought my comptech exhaust at the same dealer, along with my aspec kit, and comptech sway bar...AND my aspec wheels!!! yikes...

here's the thing i'm worried about though. when i first bought car...it had TONS of problems. it was essentially a lemon car, but at the time, being new to the car scene, i had NO idea what a "lemon car" was. i just went back over and over again to fix this and that - my service record's essentially 2 inches thick! one of the reps mentioned that the service record might be a problem.......?

I feel for you bro, I hope they cover it for you. Trannys are expensive.. I had one blow on my 99 Accord. After so much arguing back and forth because I was out of warranty by 5k miles, the most I got from them was they were willing to cover the cost of the part and 50% of the labor, so I still had to pay them $700 bux. Needless to say, I just took my Accord to the Acura Dealer and traded it in and got my 2nd gen Type S... LoL ... they didnt even realize the tranny was slipping and making a clunking sound.

Just got mine back last week. I have an 04 with the 5AT and I'm on my 4th. I'm not hard on the car, and do all highway driving... it just develops that whine, and then you know its downhill from there.

I have 78k on my odo and b/c I bought it CPO it's at least covered. I'm giving serious consideration into trading after winter before I near 100k.

This is just too sad guys.....I just hope we don't start seeing the 07-08 type-s cars getting this problem...Time will tell if the trannys are better.. If you do get another TL, make sure it's a 6 speed. Seems to be a lot more reliable. Let us know what happens with it.

Reading this thread is makes me uncomfortable. I have an 04 sitting at almost 88,000 miles now and my 4th gear whines very noticeably when it's cold and still maintains a faint whine when it's warm.

No way is that possible since there are some different harnesses and so many other things. See if anything, you could trade it up for a used 6mt tl....

I've already started shopping and the TL is still on the list - only with the 6MT. Its usually a bad thing when the service advisor and manager know you by voice when you call in.

At least I can say my dealer has upheld my expectations as to how a dealer should treat their customer. I have had the best service every time. If I wanted a particular car for a loaner car all I had to do was ask and they'd make it happen. Real plus in my book.

Yes, a transmission is covered by the powertrain warranty-- assuming the warranty is in effect.

If you bought your car CPO, or bought an Acura extended warranty you should be covered under the powertrain portion.

Hm...the only reason I ask (response to 2nd post above) was because Rick, the representative I was working with, said he'd have a PRICE for me on Monday. Thus, I assumed that I would be paying for the transmission - I believe the warranty includes 100,000 miles and 7 years? I'm a 2005 with a meager 72k

There ya go. I'm in an 04 with 78k and every one has been covered. All I have to do is sign my name when I pick it up. One bill sent out by the dealer to Acura Corp with the total amount due - the second says $0.00 no charge for me.

OH SH*T DUDE!

I always thought you bought your car new. So you bought a lemon car? That sucks. I always thought powertrain warranty covers the tranny I hope everything turns out okay for you. Good luck!

nah man, I DID buy the car NEW - what I was saying was that IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN "lemoned". Despite, Charles took care of the whole ordeal. It's being fixed under the district "good will" service. Unfortunately, because its had so many issues, my dad's forcing me to sell the car. ONLY IF I can find another TL though. Lynnwood has TWO type-s' and 2 wdp Base TL's with navigation...we'll see how it all works out.

The only problem - The KBP (eh) was a dealer trade via Portland (was driven down) and the Silver TL-S available on the lot has around 500 miles and was TEST DRIVEN like none other...I've seen people BASH on that car - unfortunately the Silver TL-S' is the color of my CHOICE!!! damn...what to do...

^ I KNOW isn't it? I was actually under the impression that I would be paying labor...but looks like the service manager went to bat for meehh...
seriously got lucky on this one...100% covered...phew!

on a second note...i wonder if the ur pulley could have caused the transmission to go? thoughts? i always did notice "uncomfortable" shifts after the install - can't really explain without having someone else actually ride in the car...

Good to hear that you covered.
I don't thin that UR pulley will affect anything on the transmission.

Damn thats awesome! Glad everything turned out okay. So this whole ordeal is actually gonna get you a new car? NICE!

But so did they tell you the transmission would not be covered under powertrain warranty? Im kind of scared.. I have an 05 too.
And imo dont get the TLS you know people have beaten.
