Another '04 transmission bites the dust...

I have a tl that was running so smooth, no signs of slipping or jerking or anything. The only issue I had since I bought it(Jan 2012) was a blinking d light which the two pressure switches fixed right up. My sister borrowed the car one night, and I got a call at 3 in morning telling me that something is wrong; the car isn't moving. So I had it towed to my house and when I went to try it. from park to drive it would just roll forward. Not engaging in any gear and making a loud noise when I put it into park. (thought it was kinda weird that even in park I had to pull hand break to stop it from rolling).

So anyway after coming to terms with it, Im just trying to figure out the best way to go about this. I know this question has been answered in other threads but shops are telling me otherwise.

To buy a used tranny, I want a 05 or 06 as Ive read that the 04 had the same problem of the 00-03 but that in 05 n 06 it was fixed. All the shops im calling are telling me that only the 04 tranny will work with a 04, and that their not interchangeable. Can someone explain this further. Maybe it is interchangeable but some modifications are in order. (Im in canada idk if that changes anything)

Also if anybody knows of any good shops in Toronto that they had any good experiences with, I would appreciate it.

04-06 all interchangeable, one member here even put an 06 v6 accord tranny, so 06-07 Accord will work also if you want to go cheap.

If it won't move in drive and it makes a nasty noise when you put it into park its likely an axle. Put it in park and try to push it. If you can push it, it's very unlikely it's the trans inless the differential went out.

Just reread and saw that you said it rolls in park. 90% chance its an axle.

You really need to check it yourself. It's the perfect opportunity for the trans shop to screw you.

I already had it taken to the shop. How would I check it myself? Is it something I can do myself?
Also my transmission is original so Ill know whether he did the work or not, Im swapping in a used one. Decided not to rebuild. I could just check after see if he actually swapped it? (Correct me if im wrong)

So you're going to pay a couple grand instead of a couple hundred?

You can jack up one side with the car in park, ebrake on, try and spin the front tire. If you can spin it with it in park, look underneath see what's spinning and what's not spinning. Make sure one front tire is on the ground at all times.

I'm telling you beyond a doubt, unless the final drive/differential is broken, you do not have a tranmission failure. Did the shop even diagnose it?

220k as in 220,000 miles?

I think he's going to replace the transmission for a bad axle. Oh well I tried. The only question is if the shop will admit to putting another axle in or if they build it into the cost of the trans to hide it from him.

I really appreciate all the info, you just saved me a grand or so. I went into the shop to check how the car was, and the car wasnt even there when I got there. After waiting about a half hour my car shows up seeming to drive fine. I ask whats been done they tell me we swapped the transmission, thats 1500 etc etc. I ask to see my tranny that came out they show me some beat old honda tranny with a different vin. Anyway long story short, They eventually told me it was a worn spline at the axle to differential. and I paid 200 and drove away, with a new cel lit up. and Im taking it to another shop to have them find out if he did any fuckery with any other parts but very frustrating day, to say the least. But the car is driving.

Thanks again ihc

Holy crap that makes me angry... This is why I try to do all maintenance myself that I can. I would probably have called the police in that situation, as they literally tried to rob you.

Wow man....good save. If that happened in California you could've sued the crap out of that shop and had it shut down. Good to hear you saved yourself a ton of cash and headache

I almost did call the police. Trust me it wasn't a friendly encounter. Now I just realized they still have my wheel lock key.

Is it true that an 06-07 Accord V6 AT will bolt up and replace a 2004-2006 Acura TL 5AT?
