6MT Still notchy after GMSMFM?

Hey all,

Put in some friction modified synchromesh a month or two ago, and it seemed to make the tranny feel so smooth.

However, lately it has felt pretty notchy. I checked the level and it was fine. The clutch is fine. The clutch fluid is fine. Maybe it is all in my head. Any thoughts?

I have seen this ALL the time. People will testify against this too but its the truth. Just because you changed the fluid, doesn't "FIX" the synchs al thought it will help the grinding problem to an extent. In 07 they changed it and I had my mechanic actually swap out the internals and put in new 3-4 gear set.

Yeah, I have the same issue. Mine isn't nearly as bad as before the friction modified (I used AC Delco SMFM) but it isn't as smooth as day one after the swap.

My car had the entire 3rd gear set changed too.

It's funny that everyone talks about 3rd gear, but my 3rd is actually fine. It just depends on the gear, changes all the time. Wondering if a new bushing would help.

The original problem people were seeing was worse than just notchiness. It would actually grind and/or kick back into neutral while shifting into 3rd. I think some may have had issues with 2nd or 4th, can't remember...but consistently 3rd. Mine popped out a few times and would grind too, but since switching fluid, that hasn't happened again. However, it is still a bit notchy in 1-4. Still happy I switched fluid.

Yup, 3rd is perfect on mine. 2nd and 6th however are a PITA when it gets cold.

How many miles on the car before you made the switch? I switched at around 11k miles after getting fed up with the increasing frequency of rough engagement of 3rd gear. Car's been perfect since then. Now at 44K miles. (I drained and refilled again with GMSMFM at 35K). Could be that you have more/different issues.

58K before I made the switch (that is when I got the car).

I would say overall it is fine, I'm just not used to it.

You have no problem with 3rd slipping out? Maybe your synchro has been changed. Mine was changed out at 10k and GMSM fluid added. Still butter now at 46k.

What exactly do you mean by "rough?" Like a rubber band chevy or nissan?
You might be on to something with the bushing idea.

Just notchy when I put the stick into gear. Like something is in the way sometimes. Other times it is fine.
