2006 Transmission Clank

Everytime I shift from park to reverse or from drive to reverse, I notice a slight lunge and a "clank" sound from the outside. It's only audible when my windows are down, and most noticeable when shifting into reverse, but I'm wondering if any one else has a problem like this.

The car has about 44k miles on it and is still under warranty so hopefully getting it fixed shouldn't cost too much. Either way, I guess since I just got my car, I'm a little paranoid.

Thanks in advance

Its normal, we all have it. If you do it patiently, it wont make the clank...

I had a feeling it was normal; I hear it a lot whenever my mom shifts on her 02 MDX. What do you mean by doing it patiently though? I've noticed this every time I shift; warmed up or not.

I'll try it again tomorrow morning. I actually tried it out this afternoon, shifting into each gear individually, I hear slight clicks when shifting into neutral and park, and a slightly louder "clank" when shifting into reverse. It's only when I shift into drive when there is almost no noise at all; just a slight nudge forward.

My bet is the pawl bar.. Try engaging your parking brake FIRMLY. Then shift out of park to R / D. Is this on a inclined driveway?

No incline, I've noticed this clank only when shifting to R or Neutral, though the reverse gear is a more noticeable. Its also noticeable to some degree when shifting back into park, but the drive gear is pretty much unnoticeable minus the small nudge forward.

I just noticed this sound today on my car as well, no matter how smoothly I shift into Reverse, I hear the clicking sound. But it only happens when done from D , move a bit and then push to R, if I go directly from P to R or from D to R without moving, I dont hear it.
You guys sure this is normal, mine is an 08 type s.

actually i was at a local shop today getting my oil changed, i always thought that sound was normal, but for me it happens from Park --> reverse. Anywho the guy at the shop said its 2 of my transmission mounds and that i should go to acura to get it fixed under warranty and there is a recall/tsb on it. This is a 06 tl only 22k miles on it. If someone has time to look into this? pls do so. i will be out of town for a week or so, but will bring it in to get it checked out at dealership after i return and let you guys know.

interesting. yesterday I went to a dealership for my 06 tranny leak, and they replaced my power steering hose under a recall, but no mention of tranny mounts.

I doubt its specific to the year, as mine is an 08 and there are no recalls on my model year. There was also a mention of an MDX here.

welp seems like nothing is wrong with the tranny or the mounts, and no mention of any recalls or anything from the dealership either. what is hilarious though is they were trying to blame the problem on my brakes saying i needed them replaced at $700+ for all four. Rat bastards !!

Have any of you noticed that it is more pronounced if you are parked on an incline and then put the car into drive/reverse.. you hear a big "BANG"! Shit makes me and all my passengers cringe! It's bad... and only when the car is parked on a steep incline, like one of those NYC pay garages.

It's nothing to worry about. It's just the pawl bar. Keep the ebrake firm before engaging D.. it'll help. The pawl bar locks in the Park gear so when you engage D or R the gear knocks back and that's what most people are experiencing.

On an incline its recommended, as far as I know, to let the weight rest on the ebrake rather than the transmission parking break, for this very reason, and thus you will not have any problems while shifting to drive or reverse.

Before shifting from D to P, shift to N and release brakes for a brief moment, the re-engage brakes. Hold brakes and shift to P, pull ebrakes, release brakes. This will get rid of any stress in the brake system before shifting to P, which i believe is the cause of the clunks.
