'04 redlines @5k

Ok I know I am new here and first want to say sorry if this thread has been done already. I searched and didnt find any answers. Ok lets make a long story short. I have a 2004 Acura tl I was in a wreck over a month and a half ago and while the car was in shop they ran it out of gas. They could not get the car started after they put gas in it so they had their mechanic look at it, he troubleshot (if thats a word) the car and ended up taking the fuel pump out and found that there was a substance in the bottom of tank. So they call me I go down there. the stuff was white but like a hard wax consistency the mech tells me he thinks when the car ran out of fuel it must have pulled some of the stuff into the pump and fuel line. He cleaned out tank and while it was still in shop they said after a day it ran smooth again. I do not know if that has anything to do with my NEW problem but thought i should include it. I got my car back monday, car ran fine monday evening and tuesday and today morning of wed 8/14/13. I was on my way home today I was a light from the house and the car did not want to go once it got to 2500 rpms it "juttered" when stomping on gas I pulled over and and put it in park. I revved the motor seemed ok so i pulled back out into traffic same issue I was going but then when i hit 2500rpms it didnt make anymore power. I got home parked it and went inside for a bit. I come back out starts up fine idles smooth but redlines @ 5000 rpms which is not where it should. It is not showing any service codes on message center, also the car never shut off on me the whole time driving home and outside my house. Anyway I let it sit for about an hour I go out to crank it and fires right up no issues , so i take it around block and seem to act fine but still only redlines @5k. Im not trying to race it or anything its just trying to figure out whats going on. Any help would be much appreciated!!!!!!

if in park, its only limited to 5k rpm.

however, if driving and cant go past 5k rpm, then it might be the app sensor

Let me clarify. When the problem started in "gear" I couldnt get it it to even 5k rpms til i got it home and parked it. Then in park it goes to 5k. The car is an automatic and has 94k miles.

like mentioned, IT WILL NOT REV PAST 5K in park.

so, you will have to test on the road. and if it still does not rev past 5k while driving, it might be the APP sensor.

I don't know what your problem is, it does sound like APP sensor like Justin said above. Maybe check to see if there are any codes being thrown, at autozone, advanced auto, etc......

Here is a thread with some pics for the app sensor......

Another thread with a different approach to the app sensor, before replacing...

Thanks so much for the replies and help!!! I was the app sensor. How much tension should be on the cable? Again thank you both!

What cable? TL has "e-gas" and there is no cable between the accelerator and throttle body. The APP sensor is the Accelerator Pedal Position sensor.

^it's all Good! But for anyone else searching for this problem, can you explain what you did? Did you replace the app sensor, or just tighten the slack in the cable? Thnks

Also, you can edit a post you made, but only for 15min. So if you forgot to add something look for the edit button down below the post (to the left of the thanks button).

Oh yes I'm sorry. The car wouldn't rev pass 2500 rpm in gear, I came here as a newb and slpr04ua6 and justnspace responded to my post. They were helpful in pointing me in the right direction w/o them would have been stuck! I ordered a new app sensor ( not cheap I paid $150 here in town) and replaced as well as tightened up the slack on the cable going to the sensor. The car runs and drives better than before the problem started. I do also suggest anyone with the same issue to check the tension on the cable cause I think that was part of my problem. The sensor was still bad ( a burnt out pin on tye connector) so I had to replace mine. Literally took 15 minutes to change. Just need a ratchet extension 10 mm socket and a 12 mm open wrench for the lock nut on cable.

Ugh!!!!! Back to square one. After replacing the app sensor on this past Saturday, car was driving great no issues. Now Thursday its doing same thing. Went to pick my kids up from school stopped at a red light gave it gas did not want to rev past 2krpm limped along at 20 mph luckily made it home but while driving home trying to give it gas it doesn't go anywhere! It bogs down never cut off but no power. Was acting like this before I changed the app sensor now doing it again. Check engine light never came on anytime this issue has occurred no messages came on message center. Any advice before I take it to Honda? Thanks for your time.

Check throttle body, fuel pressure, spark plugs, injectors, air intake, ecu......could be a problem in either fuel or air delivery

So it's doing the exact same thing as before you replaced the sensor and you found a burned pin on the connector? If this is the case I would take a careful look at your wiring harness since the car was involved in an accident. Where was it hit and how extensive was the damage? There's a good chance something is grounding out or even recieving a full 12v when maybe it's supposed to be 5v. Grounding out is the most likely scenario. If you can get the pin-out in the manual and see which ones are supposed to supply power and even signal, hook a meter to the plug (with it unplugged) and the key on and jiggle the wiring harness around and see if you get a drop out. On the signal wire you may look for continuity between it and the frame/engine. I've never looked at the pinout on this car or I would go into more detail but it has at least a power, ground, and signal and it probably has more than just 3 wires partially for redundancy. Also check the throttlebody actuator if none of that turns up a problem.

If it weren't for the sensor being bad before I would say check the exhaust to make sure it's not dented and the cats aren't plugged. It can be random in rare cases but usually not where the cat is mounted vertically. If it were exahust that were plugged it would rev to a higher rpm out of gear (up to it's limit of 5k in park) and it would sustain less and less rpm as you give it more throttle in gear. In your case I'm sure it's the sensor.
