damn you did a good job there in damages. my tree limb estimate was almost $1800. my shop is willing to work with me, since i've been there with both cars in the last 3 months with paint work. they know me very well and reassured me that my car was in good hands and they would take care of it while it was there. of course i was still hesitant to give them the keys.
just get her fixed. mine will be 8 days. ugh. and you have WAY more damage than me.
swoosh likes to find ways to save money...which is good, but under the circumstances...i'll agree with justn. minimize your aggravation.

He's much better off at this point leaving the car there and letting them do the work. I highly doubt the 8k is coming out of his pocket. If this is a reputable shop they should lifetime warranty all their work. I just got my car back and all parts have a lifetime warranty covered by my shop.
Justn, definitely ask them about doing the upgrade. If the shop is willing to do this, you should only have to pay the difference in cost that way. Really sorry to hear about such extensive damage, I know you were hoping no frame damage, and who would have even thought of tranny damage.

^why should i pay you?
why should I pay out of pocket other than my deductible?
if the cost to get my car out of the shop was/is minimal, i would have no problem taking it to another shop.
i'm not paying 500 and then a 500 deductible.
I'm looking at the damage estimate.
there is no way, you can get it done cheaper.

^just never been in this situation, before.
and how do you know i'll save money, you havent looked at the prelim. estimate.
i'm checking over all the things they bought, they bought at cost or lower.
I was going to take it to nspec_4ya's shop.
I doubt he would get anything cheaper as well. the only positive thing about taking it to his shop is that i'm guaranteed a good job.
not about saving money.
and how am i supposed to pocket that money?
the insurance will not hand me money.
I sign the papers and the shop gets paid.
there is no exchanging of money through me

The damages aren't even that bad. Transmission issue is the only thing that is expensive. I don't really need to look at the estimate, just looking at the pictures and your description tells me 95% of the damages. Doesn't matter what paper you sign, it does not matter. You can always decide to change what you want to do, probably too late though (started on work already?). And yes the insurance can hand you money if you were to say you wanted to bring it to another place and you just wanted to take the money and than pay shop directly.
I had someone that hit my fender and front bumper and I pocketed 1.5k and everything was done perfectly.
You save most of the money by parts. I bet there paying full price for the bumpers when AcKTL05 could get them for half off and other parts.

Agreed^
You can always make money on insurance deals by getting your own parts. The insurance gave me 800$ for a new right muffler up to the cat. Acuraoemparts sells it for 525$, saved 250$.
It's always in your benefit to buy your own parts UNLESS the shop is willin to hook you up with their discount. But the almost ALWAYS try to sell it I u higher than the dealer list price. They have a mark up.
Goodluck bro

Justn all this is not to make you feel bad but to only tell you that next time you have a option (I hope there will never be a next time).....
these guys charge more labor than a damn dealership...
the only this i suggest you now, is work this out with the shop so you wont have to pay ded....
btw rule of thumb with all quotes, 10% can be pocketed and ded can be avoided (at minimum)....
just take these things as a stepping stone and learn

take matters into your own hands.
you all know how insurance and shops like to keep you out of the loop, so...
I took a visit to the shop.
I got a prelim copy of the estimated damage.
as of right now, the estimated cost is at $7,915.87.
I cracked the transmission
bent the subframe.
they are replacing the transmission and the subframe.
They are ordering all OEM parts.
I even scored the OEM type-s Bumper!

at least my TL's cosmetic issues weren't self inflicted (yeah might be rubbing it in a little) . i feel for ya justn.
my baby is getting a mini facelift thanks to the tow truck guy. 2 more weeks or less. i'm happy it wasn't worse.
the upside, justn....you're safe and now you know better. we'll be getting our babies back about the same time it seems.
i feel bad for the plants you killed though.
