Wait...so when the electric power steering fails the car randomly steers itself?!?!?

One would think that when the electric power steering fails, the car ends up the same way as hydraulic power steering failure: controllable, but harder to turn the wheel.

It's not electric, but it is variable so there's both a manual and an electronic component.

Holy crap.

While the dealership and BMW NA may not be thrilled that he posted the incident online, they need to follow up and give some answers.

Your right, if this is the BMW system I'm thinking about (BMW variable ratio rack and pinion), there is a electric motor that changes the steering ration but the basic rack is still mechanical.

I believe that's correct.

Wow. I guess they have changed in the last 2 years. I used to drive my mom's mini up there whenever she had the smallest of complaints about it. They would keep the car as long as they needed to fix it and give me a loaner/rental for as long as I needed. Heck once they even towed the car from Tucson to Phoenix for a flat battery.

I've been very surprised by this whole affair. I've had my car serviced there and had reasonably good experiences. The (alleged) behavior of the GM though is just beyond the pale.

Exactly.....so how does the electronic (not hydraulic) power assist force the car in one direction, or make the car completely uncontrollable?!?!?

Makes no sense.

Not the first time I've heard of this though.

There is some speculation that because the codes that it threw were dsc and abs related it may have applied the brakes to one side of the car in a turn or something. The Op doesn't really clearly say what happened though (I tried to read the whole thing but may have missed it). Also when a modern car does lose it's assist it really does feel terrible. If he is inexperienced with that situation, and I think most people are. It may have really felt like there was no steering, but I would have thought rolling at highway speed would have helped.
