Exclamation Back to Basics

So...after getting the itch real real bad...I started searching fervently for either an S4, or a CTS-V. I read about horror stories on the Audi, so I narrowed my search and focus to the V. Gorgeous ride...mean looking, mean power, mean everything. I wanted one. Bad.

I searched for 2 solid days...and I'm someone that must act before I 2nd guess myself. In the end, the ones I liked the color of, mileage and condition, were pushing 40K. Today, I decided to pull back the reigns at the behest of my friend Joe and my financial conscience. I snapped out of it and decided to focus on why I wanted to sell the TL. I have 2 lowered 6MT Hondas...paid off, zero car payment...got good deals on them...have them perfectly maintained...but the TL has been feeling a little harsh.

I'm through both sets of tires, almost...the Aspecs and Advan...and today I decided to call off the search and put some love into the TL. Although I created a sense of urgency, the V's will still be available in a couple years from now and by then, they'll be in the 20's...and affordable. I'll need a set of tires and alignment anyway, so figured I'd mess with it a bit. Hauled butt home after work and raised the suspension up an eighth of an inch (baby steps)...changed the RSB to the street setting, and put the Aspecs on since they have a meatier tire. Swapped to my black bezel type S tails too. Such a minor adjustment made a big improvement in ride feel.

Overall, The car could use a respray of the front and rear bumpers to be perfect...the window visors need a shot of clear...the headlights aren't perfect.

So basically it looks like a 12 year old daily duty car...

and still looks perfect in the shade and from a distance.

So...yeah, right now isn't the right time to take on 40K in debt and selling her. Love the one you're with, they say...

So I did...

The funny thing is I recently told Dennis this...and my co-worker that went from a spec altima 6MT to a GS and kinda regretted it...
and I almost didn't take my own advice.

I still love you, booooo...

LOL. Yea man Id wait on the V. theyre dope cars but as you said they'll be more affordable in cpl years and thats not the type of car that wont be beat around and not maintained. Typically caddys are well taken care of by the owners

love this setup

I like the Type-S tail lights better than the red stripes on NBP.
Red stripes are crazy nice if someone wants to save money and mod tail lights that came with the car (given they DIY).

lol no regrets about my Q50 sport hybrid here . That's how it all started for me. Sold my wheels and got aspecs, parted out extra stuff but I'm stubborn in the sense that when I want something there is no stopping until I get it. This month makes a year since my very first test drive of the Q50 S and back then I told myself I'd wait for that massive first year depreciation to be gone. Could I have waited another year? Yes. I began stressing over the car and at that point I had to maintain my sanity. After considering over 6 different Q's I pulled the trigger and got what I wanted. Let's see how long you last

No doubt, Thanh...that's how I came about the design for the the red stripes and the original super reds...the base reds were so cheap, I was certain I could do something cool with them. Who knew...they're a hit.

In most lighting I agree...I love the red stripes...they do hinder a little of the visibility of parking lights and signal...but nothing that stops me from using them...and in direct sunlight where you can't see the contrast as much, they just look alright.

These actually aren't the rockstars...those would have the bottom reflector blacked out. They're just a type s (depo) with blacked out bezel. I agree though, I love the stripes and will likely go back.

Dennis...I'm truly happy that you pulled the trigger and you're happy with no regrets. I think that the Q satisfied a bunch of your needs and you had a year to be SURE it would be the end all be all for you...maybe if I were that resolute that a car would satisfy me, I'd jump.

It's just a ton of money...I drive very little to/from work...and probably get myself in a lot of trouble with that kinda HP. It's not off the table...I am still in love with that vehicle...but I'll wait for the right time, vehicle, and price to make the jump. Once I decided to make the TL more driveable...it was a huge relief that I wasn't going to be looking for an insurance quote, a car loan, and having to sell either or both of my babies. I sat back and looked at both my rides last night and though...you spoiled little bish...just be happy and fix them up.

I need to figure out this cold belt squeak on the TL...Get tires for the aspec and/or advan...dial in the suspension height (it's amazing how much more comfortable it rides even being 1/8" threading raised up...)...I think my idea of what looks good vs how low she sits is changing...I might want to go with a tight finger gap and slightly beefier tires.

on the S...I need to look into what top I'm gonna get to replace...mine is getting there.

Damn J, I had no idea you were contemplating this so hard, but I'm glad you made the choice to stay.

Earlier this year I was in the position of needing a new car too...Looked into a bunch of things including the TLX, but was like damn, do I really want to put myself 30k in debt? Then i looked at a budget for about half of that, and nothing caught my eye except the TL...again. So now I'm on my third lol.

I LOVE your car with the aspecs, probably more than I love mine with them

I just paid 165$ for one new conti DWS from Tirerack. I'm sure you know what tires you'll go with but you might wanna give it a whirl although they have a weak sidewall.

A V?! Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Curious what your front end looks like up close now.

And red stripes aren't about saving money. Some people just straight up don't like the type-s tails (Hi). So that kind of limits the modding choices. Plus type-s' have type-s tails, bases have type-s tails, NO ONE has modded reds sans a few here and there.

Maybe to some... I bought an extra set of OEM reds to do mine. Probably paid more for them than most do for depot type-s tails...

It's all about the look or (to me) the rarity.

Sorry to hear you paid so much for your OEM reds. People have a hard time selling them for $30-$40 nowadays.

If you paid more than the cost of Type-S depos, you're at loss on the "saving money" part

Don't get me wrong, i love the look of the red stripes, I've done a couple sets of them for people, but it does in fact save money to 1. mod red stripes vs 2. buying Type-S tail lights and on top, modding them for that "look/rarity"

Quan,
Thanks man!
Yep...I agree...

Chad, the front end is exactly as you'd imagine.
I read some forums on engine tick in the S4 and I eliminated it from my options...

About the tails...I do love both looks...which is why I kept a set of both. I get bored, see them in different lighting and change my mind a lot. At one point I had like 6 sets of tails...it was ridiculous.

Dude, I can't tell you how many I used to get for $40 a set...or 50...and sometimes they'd leave the fkng LED board on them

but last I looked, they were scarce without damage and reasonably priced.

Don't attempt to get too cheeky or you may make yourself look foolish.

I paid $80 for MINT OEM reds three years ago. I thought that was more than fair.

Totally not the point though. Money had absolutely nothing to do with the decision. And when we are discussing sub $200 no matter what direction you go... why would it to anyone? Being of the few mods that you can distinguish yourself from others...I would hope a $50-$100 difference in cost is not what people make their choices off of.

As for the edit: Type-s tails are type-s tails. Modded or not it's the thing the majority of people do. I want what no one else has. And when J created the stripes...there was no question what the answer was.

i think you took the "saving money" part a little too much to heart

now you're just defending your position on the rarity of red stripes and how you'd rather pay for it to be done rather than Type-S tails since every joe blow has them, i completely get it

this is too much

You're welcome.

Not my thread but I took slight offense there for J. He rocked them because he liked them...not for any monetary reasons. Same here.

Chad cmon, don't be a dick.
GP16 is like one of the nicest people around. If you take offense in what he says by reading too much out of a simple comment then you'll take offense in a lot of stuff on the net man...

Car looks sick J. I just went thru that same shit trying to convince myself of something new, well different at least. But these cars are just too damn good for the money. And everytime I give it a good wash, the desire for something new fades away.

Thought about getting some Type S waffles too, still might. But now I just got new winter tires to mount on the A-Specs, so I guess I don't really need the waffles unless I want to jump ship entirely from the land of 19s and ES2s.

By the way...this is a basic question, but how do I switch the RSB to street setting? I didn't install it myself, and I've never messed with it.

How am I being the dick? His original phrase literally said in short "its nice for the lesser option". I said it's nice because it's nice. He persisted and said it's about saving money. I persisted in saying it's not.

Really don't know why I continue to come here and bother with you 3G guys.

Car looks good as always. Better, even, with the aspecs. Good job J I'll leave you in peace.
