Pics of a (my) 2004 TL on 20's

hey guys,

got the 20's slapped on yesterday i was ify on 19" or 20" after shopping around for a while i found a shop in Paramount, CA called "First Class" that acctually let me see the 20's on the car before commiting to buy them! Which was truely First Class. I'll try not to keep anyone is suspense since i haven't seen any on 20's here yet and everyone talks about 17"-19" rims. this may change some of your minds on the range of wheel size.
anyway i' ll post ASAP...

(2) Offset??
(3) Size of Lip on wheels, or lip?
(4) Fenders rolled?
(5) Ride/comfort compared to stock?
(6) Weight of wheels compared to stock? feel heavy?

And, finally,
(7) howz the rear clearance with heavy passengers in back seats and over bumps??

I'm just curious: How does that affect your ride? The roads in some parts of Cali are poorly maintained.

Try this hosting service.

Then paste the picture url here with the word pic in square brackets. End it with /pic (similar to /quote when you quote someone).

ok guys here it goes

sorry i took long...thank 340hp worked like a charm.
anyway... as far as the ride its pretty much the same there is a slight different given the tires are 225/35 but not enough to bother me. i had 40's and 35's on my last car 2001 Acura CL on 18" and its the same difference.

as for twenties questions here it goes:

1) 20x 8.5 and no rub or mods needed.
(2) sorry don't know
(3) no lip
(4) nope
(5) not really noticable the tires are much thinner but well worth the trade.
(6) not that much i lifted both at the shop to see the difference and of course there is but, very little more metal less rubber.
(7) no problem there and even if i had some really heavy people back there it seems it would tuck.

I am very happy with the choice, it seem i can even go down about .5" and get a really agressive look but, then I'm sure i ll have problems with people in the back. let me know what you guys think...

recomended

that tire was recomeneded by the shop... I think the tire sits ok, they didnt have a problem getting them on.
It is on the higher side of whats recomended for the application, however it give my a little more clearance and the ability to drop it down. Plus i like the look of the tire slanted in rather that flush.

heres the application guidelines from Nitto and the link.

< wheel size>
*225/35 ZR20 90W 10.0 26.22 9.05 7.5-(8.0)-9.0 1323@50 791
*245/35 ZR20 95W 10.2 26.69 9.65 8.0-(8.5)-9.5 1521@50 778

:smokin: The wheels look really sharp. Profile is a bit low for my taste, but it sounds like it was just what you were after and that you're happy with them - that's what's important.

Gotta pull off those dealer tags unless they're paying you to advertise! J/K - I hate those things.

Bling? you think they re over the top? i kinda thought it was a little bit of bling with some class... more of away from the racer type look and a little more on the luxury side...or were you trying to be sarcastic?

I was considering 19's and you have not changed my mind. I've yet to see a set of 20's I like. Although, even if I saw 20's I liked, I would'nt conisder putting them on my car. They are just to big for the car, and chrome doesn't necessarily = class IMHO. To each his own and I'm not trying to put you or your car down. This is just my honest opinion.

It sounds like you're satisfied with the results and that's a good thing. But not knowing the offset is not good. The wheels seem to be flush or maybe even just outside of the fenders, I think your going to have a hard time lowering the car unless you get coilovers and do some extreme modifications to your fenders.

It also seems that you compromised by getting 225's on an 8.5" tire in order to get the wheels and tires to fit. This might have been a clue that these wheels weren't right, size wise, for your car.

Whew! Good luck keeping those wheels from getting scratched up! I have already scratched my rears far more than I can stand, and I've only had the car for a couple of months now.

My next tires will protect my wheels, instead of the other way around.

It doesn't look good.

Just too big....it looks oversized.....

I think 19's are the best most agressive match for the TL

Don't like it at all. Plus chrome is just not my thing.

not older yet so i guess we'll see...as far as a car like this...it seems you mean it as a level of sophistication. I'm not trying to be a 20's advocate but, its the wheel most choose for most of the sophisticated type cars.
as for ulgy...i can appreciate your opinion but, the way it was put showed no class maybe you can learn from automata or the others. they seem to have a lot of it.

Hey Automata,

thanks, wasn't tying to change anyones mind just providing another view. i didnt mean the chrome was class, i think the chrome is more on the bling side. It was more towards the whole look (for me that is) wheel design, car color etc...
on the wheels and tires theres still at least and inch clearance which should let me fit a 245...once i wear these a little i can try a 245.

many people well at least around here Los Angeles, CA area put 20's on g35's, maxima's, Beemers, CTS and many other cars... why not Acura TL? or is it just the general TL owners opinions not too?
it seems most of the owners are going for the racer look, why is that? with this new design of the car its more versitle for different styles...

anyway... thanks everyone for you opinions so far, thats the reason i and probably everyone joined this site.

The whole looks is what doesn't look right. I like the wheel design....like I said I'm not a fan of chrome, but I have nothing against it.

Is just the on th TL 20's look oversized.....plus like some one else mention the tires don't seem like the right size.

Thumbs up

Different strokes, for different fokes.

Some people like the "race" car look, some like the big chrome wheel look, some don't like either. The bottom line is, you should mod your car as you see fit, if you're so inclined. The great thing about forums like this, is you can see all kinds of mod's you may never have considered. Diversity is a good thing.

It's your car, your money and your youth, I say enjoy!

Hey those look pretty nice. Its a basic design that does draw attention, slightly flashy, but not excessively IMO. Size looks just right. You may try lowering it but the gap does not really draw too much attention IMO, and if it would rub you'd be pissed. Plus you picked Blue/Camel which is one the best combos on the TL.

Don't worry too much about the criticism for choosing wheels that are "too big" or tires that are "too small" or for choosing chrome. Fact is your young (like myself) and this car is your car so i'm glad you went with your gut and went big.

As far as the wheels looking "too big", its relative to what people are used to seeing. Like you said people out here in L.A. roll on 19s 20s 21s 22s all day on a variety of fine automobiles, not to mention 24s and 26s on SUVs.

Most people in the rest of the country just can't understand because they never see this and (because of weather and road conditions) they can't run such low profile tires even if they wanted to.

I plan on getting the TL when my lease is up and i'm considering 20s if they'll fit without any rubbing whatsoever and if i can find or have made a lightweight/forged wheel. I run 20s now on my 5-series and have not had any regrets, only wish they were as light as stock.

If you get a chance ask your wheelshop about your offset, i'd be very curious to know what it is.

Also, are the wheels hubcentric, or in other words, do you feel a slight vibration through the steering wheel at certain speeds on the freeway?

thanks guys... i ll check on the offset and no i dont get vibration and i ve taken it to about 90-100 mph. i m thinking of taking a couple more pics .. they dont look that big to me, maybe it was the angle of the pics i posted...

oh and no rub at all and you can turn the wheel as much as you want, make a full u-turn no rub. thats why i was comtemplating lowering it a bit to get that look your beemer has... thats what i m really shooting for..

The rims poke out a little too much for my taste. Doesn't follow the lines of the car. Also I don't think 20's look that great on the TL because of the size and the shape of the wheel wells. Black and chrome also don't go that well together...I would have went with Gun Metal.

But anyways its all about your tastes...different strokes for different folks.

also the car is blue not black... which IMO looks good with chrome.
i agree its all about what you like...

Looks great, but kills the car in all ways possible. Gas mileage is gonna suck ass now, and dont try racing anyone with those.

surprisingly I thought they would look bad, but much more tasteful than I thought. how much they set you back? I personally couldnt see spending over 3K on rims/tires for a 35K car. I had friends trying to talk me into custom HRE's...but there's no way Im putting 5-6K worth of rims on a 35K car. Saved that stuff for my 745i.

And BTW..definitely need a wider tire. 225 just isnt cutting it. Try at the very minimum 235, i went 245 and I love the way the sit about flush with the rim. i would worry mostly on the stress heavy chrome wheels will be causing to the tranny and related components. Thats why i went with hypersilver 19s.

but, totally respect you for your decision. And I said, they actually are not offensive and dont look bad!

thanks guys... they were 1800 out the door..so the price was great... the shop said they garranteed their price...
haven't had them long enought to feel the gas mileage ,but what the hell its like 2.50 a gallon anyway...
as for racing... i think i gave up on that when i choose these...plus all the M's, STI's and EVO's are wooping our butts anyway.
Hey Vegas TL04 I'm headed over there this wed... go once a month for work. i m gonna drive this time, test out the 225's.. but IMO (now) your right 235 or 245 would have been a better choice. i ll wear these some (for the sake of not throwing the money away) and get new ones.

No, I have the stock 17" wheels, and they don't stick out nearly as much as yours do.

I (and many others) have found it way too easy to scratch the wheels when going around tight corners, or picking up parking tickets at a garage.

I'm warning you so that you'll be aware of this problem. But considering how far your new wheels stick out, I expect that you'll have some scratches before you hit 10k unless you are very careful.
