That tire setup (stretching) is known as "Hipari" tire in Japan. It's very big in the drift seen:

"The origin of hipari, as far as I know, is twofold. One: drifters/touge drivers wanted a way to get great steering feel out of normal street tires. Thus, they stretched them to make the sidewalls stiffer, without having to pony up the cash for more expensive tires. Two: drifters/touge drivers want to run as low as possible, and with the current trend of big, wide, low-offset wheels, stretching the tires and running tons of negative camber is the only way to get the necessary clearance..."

Skwatoe, I also know its a drift "style", BUT, since were dealing with sedans and a VIP look. I failed to mention the sporty drift style, and only try to describe our VIP style cars. But yah your right. BUT! i was right about wanting to be low as possible to try and get agressive rims to actually fit.

Werd. I just needed to throw in a spec of my unhealthy love for the Japanese car culture, lol. If I had the extra $$$, this thread would have a 2nd AM TL dumped, VIP'ed and stretched!

Well, I don’t talk “shit” and I never once talked “shit” about anyone. My post was not directed towards anyone. My references to costs and looks were simple included in my post so that my question could be better answered. Wseminuk did answer my question from an aesthetic point of view, but Skwatoe answered it with more depth and history (oh, and he didn’t insult my car or my knowledge base). Everyone has a right to voice their opinion and should never be insulted for asking a question.

Yay! I win, lol!

It's inevitable, there's sooo many cultures and sub-cultures that make up certain looks, styles, or schools of thought, that you're bound to step on someone's toes. It's like when I put Lexus IS-F rims on a TL; big no-no, lol!

This thread is a perfect example of this; I love this style, and my close friend with a TL-S is disgusted by it! It's not for everyone I guess.

So I'm having this debate with someone. I have a friend who swears the Stretch tire trend was started by the Volkswagon camp, due to some tire width regulation of somewhat in Europe. I, on the other hand, believe that it was started by the Low Rider community.
Anyone wanna lay down the true history on Tire stretching.
BTW, I dig Stretch tires on aggressive offset wheels. I fell in love with that look back in the early '90s (possibly late '80s) when my uncles and their friends were rocking it on their VW's and BMWs. It was almost a taboo to pull that look on Hondas/Acuras back in the days, but now it seems accepted.
Some like Performance, some like styles. Nokiaboy is going for the best of both worlds! Good Luck on the build. BTW, are you planning on putting her in the StreetCar showoff this year?

mug- im going for the vip style look thats popular in japan and is being popular in the states now. its all about the stance and fitment of the wheels and suspension pretty much being the car is luxury. not everyone likes it, especially if they dont know why it's like that but to each his own.

rodney- yes i chose the tire size just for the looks pretty much, but i will be adding spacers to make the fitment for the rear the widest it can go w/o rubbing when slammed. their's probably around 8 mm's or around there to fill up but i never really took the time to measure it.

808night - yeah wseminuk helped me out with the vs-xx's, he did a ok job buffing out the haze. after that, they were sold to my friend and now its on a silver g35.
as for the car show.. well i was going to enter it in this months one but i never have enough funds for re-painting the front bumper and time to black out the headlights. =( hopefully it should be ready for the next one! we should all enter our tl's in the next one? ohh and as for the supercharger.. well i might need to sell it now because i need some scrillas.. soooo i might be selling it SOON if anyones interested?!

those are the only pictures i have as of now but i will be having a photo shoot so i'll be updating everyone again in the future.
thanks for everyone elses comments, it's much appreciated!

Love the rims and the stretched tires you have on now.... Except I love your old rims more.
<3 mesh rims.
It's too bad to hear that you may be selling the SC.
Wish I had money to buy it from you... but being a student and 19 in Dec, money doesn't come so easily when I need to pay for the car as well. =[
Oh well, guess I'll have to wait for another opportunity when I have enough cash.

i'm confused... what's the point of slamming the car that low if the fender's hiding the stretch look of the tire?

From DriftJapan:

"The history behind hipari style stretched tires is two fold as poor people have been stretching tires onto wheels that don’t belong forever while euro tuners in Germany and Belgium started stretching their tires out of legal necessity. Local laws there require that the tire tread be within the fender line and with wider or lower offset wheels that can cause problems. To maintain the wide wheel fashion and keep the car street legal, narrow tires are stretched over the wide wheels."

It's hard to say who started it first. I guess you could look up when Europe began enforcing that law, and compare that date to the first records of when touge/dorifto hipari came into play.
