Gray Ghost progress thread

So I picked up my "new to me" TL on March 1st after searching the entire Chicagoland area for a low miles 2006 AM with Navi (pretty hard to find). Drove 50 miles to downtown Chicago to pick her up. She's fully loaded with 37,000 miles. The previous owner obviously had no clue how to park and tore up the rims but I'm going to put some nicer rims and tires on anyway so that didn't matter.

Here are my mods so far:

First mod was the Progress rear sway bar.

Second mod was the midmuffler delete Dynomax resonator.

Third mod was the Weathertech window visors:

Fourth mod was the Depo clear tails:

Fifth mod was the DC Sports CAI w/K&N drycharger:

Sixth mod was AckTL05's cleared headlights with ZKWr lenses and CF inserts:

Seventh mod was the A-Spec side skirts (got the whole kit but haven't had time to do the front and rear):

So that's it for now. In the near future I'll have the front and rear lips on. Roof and trunk spoilers. Blue LEDs in the interior. Clear to amber bulbs in the turns.

And hopefully some gunmetal rims once my wallet has gotten over the first round of mods.

That's gotta kill you to have the rear and fronts ready but not on. I know I would be thinking about it all day.

Great beginning mods. Get a Jpipe and some PCDs for some power.

Welcome! Looks like you are off to a good start on the mods. Any plans for tint or debadge? Thought I would bring them up since they're two of the less costly and easiest to do. Just my . What type of rims you planning to get?

No tint just cause I don't like giving the cops a reason to hassle me (been there, done that). Thinking about TSW Strips 18" or 19". I commute 100 miles a day to work and back so comfort is a priority. Still considering a debadge.

They're on the list just want to get rims and rubber first.

Yea I was going to do it this weekend but once I realized I was going to put clear to amber turns in and would have to take the bumpers off to do that I figured I'd do it all at once when the bulbs arrived.

Yea it took some searching. Most were 70 to 100K.

Nice looking ride and great purchase with such low miles! You have been pretty busy with your mods but I agree that tint will set it off even more. Here is a link with all the state tint laws so the cops should not be bothering you:

Might as well get it the way you want it as soon as you can so you can enjoy it.

If you're talking about the lips and side skirts, the skirts are on and the lips are in the garage.

Interesting, I was always told by cops that in Illinois you couldn't have any tint on the front driver's and passenger's windows. Seems as if they either changed the law or they were BS'ing me. Might be time to start shopping around for good tint places.

it changed 1-2 years ago. you can have 50% legally on your fronts, and 35% on the back glass.

welcome, I also live about 50 mi from chicago!

Nice! Guess I should have been paying attention. I never bothered to tint the windows on my last 2 cars because I got tired of getting pulled over it. Question though; the link that D68soldier posted says that you can have 35% all the way around. Is this not correct?

hmmm. I actually can't use his link??? 404 forbidden?

as far as i know, if you had say an suv which has factory tint, you can match the fronts which would be 35%

but if you have a car which had a 0% glass, you can at most do 50% in front

The combination section confuses me.

actually that's the least confusing break down I've seen.

so i guess i was wrong lol. but yes you can have 50% fronts! which i know doesn't look cool, but they have all the benefits of tint, cutting the heat of the sun and whatnot.

So if I'm reading it right because I have 0 tint stock I can't do 35% all the way around? It has to be 35% in the rear and 50% up front?

i would have to agree with the latter...
1. 30-35% in the rear / up to 50% in front.
2. If you have below 30% tint in the rear, you can not tint the front.
so, from what i understand you could have a staggered 50F/35R, or a uniform 50F/R.

although, what i always did was run 35 all around and leave your sunshade on the sunroof open, it'll make it look staggered during the day, but then you DO run the risk of tickets.

Ok so my roof and trunk lid spoilers are ordered (bmwoemshop). Should be here next week.
Ordered a set of hood shocks (mine were shot, damn hood slammed down on me this weekend) should be here by the end of the week.
Got my clear to amber bulbs yesterday. Installed the tails. Waiting to remove the bumper for the A-Spec kit this weekend so I can do the headlights.
Thanks to veggiemonster and D68soldier I am adding tint to my mod list. Just gotta find a reputable place in the area.
Thinking about the sidemarkers too if I can find them for a reasonable price.

Glad the link helped out. I will be looking forward to seeing more of your progress. Hopefully, my ride gets out of the shop tomorrow so I can post pics and update my progress thread.

Installed my hood shocks this weekend. Easy job, took 2 minutes. What a difference! Now when I open the hood it actually goes up without me having to push and I don't have to prop it to make sure it stays open. Worth the $35. I didn't take pics cause we all know what hood shocks look like.

Now I'm waiting for my Easter break so I can get the front and rear A-Spec lips on and hopefully I'll get my roof and deck spoiler from bmwoemshop so I can get them installed.

Made an appointment to get tinted. Ordered moleskin for the window channels.

Finally found the rattle that was coming from the front passenger's side. I was driving home yesterday and I finally got sick of listening to the rattle so I opened the glovebox and it went away, closed it back up and it came back. When I got home I spent a few minutes pounding on the dash and glovebox to see if I could pinpoint the problem. Turns out there is a hook/latch on the right side of the glovebox that when closed sits in a plastic channel, the hook was vibrating against the channel and creating a rattle/buzz. Stuck a small adhesive felt disc on the side of the channel and voila no more rattle.

Dude, how do you like your 300?

Believe it or not, I was considering a black 300 before I bought my Type S. My 21 year old daughter wouldn't let me buy "the pimp-mobile".......LOL.

Love it. Lots of power, lots of luxury, rides like a dream and has plenty of balls when it's time to get up and go. Searched for it for a month (AWD were pretty rare). I picked it up with 38k on it in Feb. 2009 put 62k on it over the next 3 years. It would still be my daily driver if my wife's Jeep hadn't turned into a money pit. I decided if we were going to get something new I was going to get something more mpg friendly for my 100 mile daily commute. So she drives the 300 now. I still drive it on the weekends.

Thanks.

They're on the list, just a little lower down because of cost. Trying to convince myself $80 for a couple of small pieces of plastic is worth it. Every time I see the red on the rear quarter I say it's worth the $80!
