Aaron, your bike COULD be fine...with most of those comfort bikes, the point of weakness is the rims (and possibly front shock, but for just jumping curbs, assuming you're doing it smoothly, a spring loaded 80MM should be plenty). You would want a commuter cyclocross type of bike that has a little tread, a more robust wheel and possibly a smooth traditional 2 x 26" tire on it to absorb the shock. Jumping a 700CC tire will bend the rim. Don't ask how I know...

LOL@you guys...
I've been into bikes for a bit...but to be honest, in 2000, I only owned 1 Walmart bike. The madness started in 2005 when I started reading up on it, and getting into the differences in parts etc. Then, as you all know, I like to youtube and learn how to do stuff myself...especially when EVERY tune/repair at a bike shop costs a minimum of $100 per visit. I was like, FK that...if i can work in an engine bay, I can certainly work on a piece of metal that's fully exposed.
There's something really beautiful about a bicycle...it's so simple and yet so complex...one little thing can be off and make the ride suck...but when all is well, it's perfect synergy. Really enjoy it.
road tires = 80-120 PSI
comfort 700CC tires = 40-60 PSI
full on 2" tires = about 25 to 40 PSI (depending on what kinda trail you're riding).
Best bet, read up on these...find the model you dig, or want...then scour craigslist for it!
I LOVE specialized...they're motto is "INNOVATE OR DIE".
http://www.specialized.com/us/en/home/
go to BIKES/MULTI-USE/it'll look more like a traditional mountain bike. if you want to hop stuff, you can't have a tall handlebar.
small/thin tires are great for distance...more distance per pedal, less rubber resistance
thick knobby tires can jump curbs/rocks/roots, offer more grip but offer more resistance
they have thick smooth/hybrid tires that would likely do the trick.
As an example...here, it's an almost 2 inch tire for a 26" rim, so it can take a bit of a hit without making the rim buckle...but it's pretty smooth so it'll allow fast riding anyway.

after work, i bike to the gym. i dont want to use public streets, but the curbs arent bike friendly (no dip) so i have to get off my bike like a jackass at each stop and its a hassle.
this is essentially the one i have, not exactly like it. but i forget the model on mine and this looks close enough

Aaron, you're actually not too badly set up on that bike already, but it's a 700 rim, which is bigger. It seems pretty beefy, and comes with tires that are as robust as you'll find on a comfort bike.
My suggestions is keep that bike for cruising around, and buy a moutain bike that you can use for jumping the curb to go to the gym.
Ty, you can do better...save up...my Specialized Crossroads cost me $330 and is heads and shoulders better than that bike. Has a shock on the seatpost to preserve those nuts a yourn.

actually, just yesterday, i found a new route to the gym. i can avoid all public roads and take a back alley path behind this apartment/townhome complex. pretty sweet.

Well, my FB comment was more geared toward the little tiny road bike tires...until I rode one, I would always think "GET ON THE FKN SIDEWALK!!!" Then I road it and realized that every single expansion joint on the sidewalk feels like a crater so it's like DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN....
Plus, if you hit a small crack, for it, instant flat on those tires.
Aaron, so you're good with no upgraded bike? What is the link to the craigslist nearest you?
if you have your mouth open and a little airplane noise is being made, don't be surprised if you DON'T end up with a mouth full of food.

Around where I live it seems like no one pays attention to anything around them when they ride their stupid ass bike. I've almost hit a lot of bikers cause they just turn out and expect you to watch out for them.

yup most def. i just switched sides of the road, which uncovered a long stretch of sidewalk. so the only time i'm on the road is at a crosswalks, otherwise its sidewalk and behind this huge complex which conveinently stretches all the way to the gym parking lot.
when i discovered it i'm like holy shit...this is going to work out well.

^^^ hahaah i agree...
since young we have been taught to respect someone for either of 2 reasons:
1> they deserve it
2> they demand it (as they are significantly bigger either age or size )
some bikers think they are invincible and ride on the road like they own that shit....its almost like a car owner cutting off a 18wheeler...if that guy doesnt brake, then your it buddy....
i love places around my house that a bike friendly....they have a little bike lane on the road which helps out both sides of the coin....but every now and then i will see a Lance Armstrong wanna be who is driving on the road and not in the bike lane....
it does remind me of this scene and i just

Bikes have the same rights to road use as cars and motorcycles. Plus, in most cities, riding on the sidewalk is illegal once over the age of 12. You can get a speeding ticket on a bike. A failure to yield (hand signals are required too), failure to stop, etc.

Right and when a biker is being observant and paying attention to cars on the road and properly signalling and such that's fine, but just flailing about on the road like some senseless fool is going to get you hit. Also a lot just cross the street without looking behind them, well, don't get mad at me if I damn near hit you when it's your fault to begin with. Also I hate it when you see them riding on some two lane road with no shoulder at all and a lot of blind corners. I understand you want a challenging ride, but when I can't see you at all coming around a corner, you probably shouldn't be riding there.
Trust me, I know. It's aggravating as fuck.

People in general don't think i almost killed at least 5 retards riding bike one morning. A group of around 25 people were riding bike through Kendall, i was driving at about 55 coming to a green light, and all the freaking geniuses decide to take the red without ever stopping. I had to slam on the brakes in a f150 with about 1500lbs in the back...my work truck...swerve out of the way, and barely miss them. All i could think was you have got to be joking, if i wasn't paying attention i would of killed a few of them. Best part is i bet they would said they had right of way if i had, i wouldn't have a chance with 20 retards defending their retarded friends.

^Tell us how you really feel
The only thing that REALLY bugs me about bicyclists is when they ride on a 2-lane road with a speed limit over 35. Most of the time people are doing it for recreation and have NO need to be on a busy road where people are going that fast. There are plenty of other roads that they can ride.

If you love to bike, move to Weston. Simple enough...and down in Miami, they have a huge chip on their shoulder and a sense of entitlement. The other 20 would have dragged Dreem1er out of the car and whooped his azz while waiting for the cops. Taking no accountability for the fact that they just didn't stop.

In Miami at least, and a big part of broward people feel they have right of way no matter what. They feel everything they do is right, i admit that i speed, but if I'm doing 90 and you pull out of a shopping center and i hit you, i get a speeding ticket...given it can be proven...and you get a ticket for causing an accident.
Its the same thing with bikes yea we have to share the road but use your head, if your on a busy road and cars are going passed you at 30mph at least what happens if you fall off your bike or someone doesn't see you. Chances are you won't be walking away from that. Riding bike on non residential roads is about the same as jumping on the expressway on a scooter that can't go faster than 30 mph your asking for a fight you can't win.

Whats up with RDX owners?

I only have one encounter with an entitled bicyclist. He was riding in the middle of the lane and wouldn't yield to traffic. I went around him, and I was completely in the oncoming traffic lane. I said nothing to him, didn't even look at him as I passed (doing the speed limit, shockingly). The asshole screamed "FUCK YOU!". I soooooo wanted to slam on the brakes with him behind me.
