Cold air intake question

Thinking about going with the Injen or possibly AEM cold air. any preferences on ether brand? I had an 04 STI and with the cold air intake I had to get the car pro tuned to run properly is that also the case with the 3G TL's ? or is it just like a plug and play thing

plug n play. doesn't matter what brand you get as they all do the same thing...make noise.

search in this section and you'll find about forty-thousand threads on this exact topic.

It doesnt matter what brand intake, they will all function pretty much the same. There are no extra benefits to having any one intake one over the other. I'm guessing the STI was probably Mass Air which is probably why you had to have it tuned. Me personally, I would get whatever intake is the most affordable. They are more less just make these cars a bit louder.

Thanks for the reply's and the link that's a damn good deal 100 bucks cheaper then the Injen. I just realized you have to pull the front bumper to put in the CAI..not as motivated to do this now lol

You can check out what the V2 looks like installed. I have to agree with SharksBreath and Dave_W. I does sound and look nice, but I can't say regarding the HP. The instalation is not that difficult. Good luck on you choice!

Yeah once you watch the DIY vid you get a good sense for it. It really is easy to remove the front bumper. And it is one or two steps easier if you don't have the A-Spec front lip.

But, IMO, the price for these intakes is too much for me. I just did the resonator box delete, and plan to do a K&N drop-in filter. I doubt that a $300 CAI would make any more power than this.

Both companies make great parts. The AEM V2 is the most popular intake we sell for the 3rd gen TL.

completely different car as far as the sensors on the engine
the STI was a MAF sensor car; where the TL is a swag car (some wild ass guess; aka MAP sensor based); which is not nearly as sensitive as the MAF sensor on the STI (since it measures the ACTUAL airflow)

all they are is a pipe and filter there really isn't any logical explanation why the other ones are double the price .?

Yes they are just pipe and a filter, but there are a few other factors. Fitment and material quality would be the main thing I'd think. I don't own any of these so I'm not making a judgment call on the fitment or quality, just saying those are things to consider besides the price. Oh, and vendor support.

You get what you pay for. The AEM, INJEN, K&N, TAKEDA intakes all use better quality filters that flow more air and better quality aluminum. The bracketry is generally better also. Also the major companies actually do Research and Development when manufacturing an intake; all the other companies do is copy designs or make the cheapest pipe possible. Without the major companies you wouldn't have the cheap imitators.

I have a 04 tl and installed a kn shorty due to weather conditions here the full cat would be more of a headache. I have not noticed any performance increase, just a little louder, and a rough idle. I have ran kn in previous vehicles and loved it, not impressed with it in the tl tho.
