Blown motor in TL-S, replacement options?

Hey everyone I am looking to replace the blown motor in my 2007 TL-S. I am looking to replace it with the J35A8 in the 2006 RL. I found a few online but wanted to check and see if someone could tell me if that would be a direct drop in? Do I need a new ecu, wiring, anything else?

Any other info in regards to engine swaps in these cars would be a great help too! Didn't have much help with searches

I have found a motor at a good price. More just wondering if it's a simple drop in or are there extra parts required to make it work?

The engines do match. You cannot base this off of a parts website diagram. I purchased a 2006 RL longblock for my 2007 TL-S sleeved motor build and a friend purchased a 2005 stamped block for himself as well. All j35a8 RL engines fit into UA7 vin chasis and bolt up to either the UA7 5AT or 6MT. No question there. All you will find is that the harness is SLIGHTLY different...but just swap in your TL-S harness and don't worry about hooking up the secondary coolant temp sensor that is found on the RL j35a8 water passage near the thermostat. Done.

^good info. Is there any benefit or advantage the RL motor holds over our engines?

OP how'd you blow a rod?

What Gerzand said, I too was looking into swapping a J35A8 from an RL when I blew my J32A3. For Type S guys its a straight swap. For us base 6MT guys, you need to get the clutch case from a Type S 6MT and swap over the internals. You will also need an ECU from a Type S with the Hondata harness to run it.

The RL J35A8 tends to be much cheaper and more readily available than the J35A8 from the Type S. Also the RL motor is rated at 290hp compared to the 286 in the Type S.

Not trying to go too far off topic - but did you also have to use a type-s clutch and flywheel then too, or can you stay with the 04-06 style? I think Paul said there are some bearing differences in the internals as well - any idea which if so?

how did you break a rod on that motor? It is extremely rare for these motors to suffer catastrophic failures...
