Been searching for a J-Pipe DIY Install guide

but haven't been able to find a single one. maybe i'm not searching correctly? i tried

j-pipe install
j pipe diy
j pipe install

and couldn't find any threads with instructions or pictures on how to remove the stock j-pipe and install an aftermarket one.

could someone help me? or maybe there is a thread on this already and i just over looked it?

Looking under the car is all the DIY you need.

To start with, what Jpipe are you going to install?

It's 9 bolts and one or two hangers.

Even I didn't need a DIY.

Which J-Pipe do you have? Not sure on the final design, but at one point the RV6 Long-Tube (V3?) might have required some trimming of the plastic underbody cover.

Don't need to remove the 3rd cat. Just install the J-Pipe bolts loosely until you've got everything in place, then tighten to torque.

Step 1: Take off the 9 nuts
Step 2: Put everything back together with the new j-pipe

Done.

Pretty much! You might need a torch to heat up the bolts if there too rusty … otherwise “liquid wrench” or something equivalent should do(probably not)

Use some PB blaster, a breaker bar, and a 6pt socket. Make sure you use a constant pressure. And make sure the socket is COMPLETELY on there.

EDIT- I think they all are 17mm but I could be wrong.

breaker bar is the only thing you need other than a long socket for the bolts....

i have a hookup at the firestone, you can go there and ask them to break all the bolts and come home and pop em off....some shops you can give 10-20 bucks cash and get it done....

crack the nuts and hand tighten them...

trying to install and exhaust on a buddy's car and just couldnt pop 2 bolts off....so took it to a shop....gave them $20 to put it up on a rack and pop the bolts off and went home and did the install....

the only downside is the car sounds like shit when there is an exhaust leak LOL....

Yeah watch out guys on DIY, mine were pretty rusted on there. I tried doing it myself last winter in a cold garage. Spent HOURS struggling. Couldn't jack the car high enough and it was so hard to get leverage in that position. Used PB blaster and with all the strength I had I broke all the bolts loose one by one and had the J-pipe off.......then I realized what I had done. I stripped the majority of the threads and actually snapped a couple bolts! Thats quite a feat to manage by hand.

I had no choice but to track down a willing shop in a hurry to help me fix the mess. I drove with NO J-pipe. (WOW you gotta hear how loud it was!! But it felt like the car gained 50hp! lol) A shop did help me out but it cost me 90 mins labor for what should have been a 30 min job. They used a blowtorch and told me I should have too. (Duh!) I had to get new bolts and rethread a couple of them. Not fun, lesson learned.

But the end result with the RV6 V3 is something I can appreciate everyday I drive the car. AMAZING!

Fair point. I forget about you guys up north and the effect of road grime, salt and corrosion. Much easier here; and even then heat-cycling can make 'em tough(er) to remove.

Damn good idea.

I just put an extra J-Pipe in the mail to you. Should arrive any day. Just be patient.

OP - like everyone has said, it is very self explanatory.

Bearcat94 - For the RV6 Long tube J Pipe, I didnt have to trim anything it fits just right but might have to work it in just a bit though.

sorry people, my computer has been acting up for the past week and i've finally been able to fix it. well get it to work properly again.

as far as the j-pipe goes, i did get it installed.

like all of you said, it was pretty easy. i just sprayed wd40 on all 9 bolts and let it sit for about 30 minutes and started taking each bolt off with me and 1 other friend. if i remember correctly, they are actually 14mm, not 17.

however, one thing i am concerned about the install is that while installing my xlr8 pipe, i noticed it has a hinge on it at the very end, just like the stock j-pipe. but on my xlr8, the steel stem that comes out just flaps up and down. i didn't have a bolt to tightly secure it so it would hold still. i still managed to install it, but just without the bolt to hold that hinge from moving up and down.

you may be wondering "wtf is he talking about" so i got a picture to show you...

i installed the pipe as IS. from the looks of it, it was supposed to come with a nut and bolt to tighten that stick in place, but mine was used so the nut and bolt wasn't included..

well i be ok? should i be careful when driving on a bumpy road (will the pipe bounce up and down, leading it to scrape on the road?)

Um..... well the nut is welded on it looks like. So just go to Home Depot and find the right size and thread pitch and slap it on. Pretty simple task.
