Lol, that dang preload!

Yes, that is the “crack”. It seems to be a casting imperfection closer to the differential. He just bought a new clutch case for $508 shipped from Honda. Seems they had it while Acura didn’t??

OUCH, Hopefully shipping isn't too bad. Product is listed at under 20lbs. & Acura can still get that part.

EDIT: Didn't see that price included shipping but glad he was able to find it.

Thanks Y! Any ASPECs parts?

Wonder if Acura will make more parts in the future Like they did with S2000

Acura TL Builder, just an FYI. You probably have already seen this flange sealant stuff from Honda.
It looks like it is applied under pressure via an aerosol can. The attached service bulletin also states that it can be used on gasketless oil pans; therefore, maybe the trans. case as well?

The quicker bead application via aerosol pressure may help give you a little more time to do the 'juggling' act when marrying the two trans. cases together.

I didn't know Honda had this stuff. It would work for for the first time around, but I have a technique down at this point and the cap goes on in seconds.

How much are the fronts going for? I’d like to one for the red and silver TL. Turbo TL is getting Andys heavy fiberglass bumper prepped and painted next week!

Thank you Zeta for the suggestion on NBP paint!

Only Type S front lip still available in WDP or NBP, cheaper if you can get at your local dealer. All thing and done after tax come out around $320ish depend on your state sale taxes, the rear and side are no longer available to purchase and now fetching stupid high price on the 2nd hand market.

Side goes roughly $350 - $500 (used) depend on how bad is the damage.

Rear Type S goes for stupid amount of money, use one goes for $850 before shipping and I had seen couple sold for $1200 or more.

Your best bet is to find a part car off LKQ and pull it off ASAP other wise you are looking easily $2k just for the rear and side.

Tyrone is my local Acura parts guy.

Tyrone, I still have that cheap Rainer left over beer After that Seattle beach trip! Remember that first Airbnb we rented? Y(Tyrone) was kind enough to pay for the second place before the first place I got that he suggested was LITERALLY a shed With mats in someone’s backyard.

P2R just finished the valve job on the hand PnP’d J32a2 heads lovingly done by our own @oraclem20 ! On them He will put basically what was put onto the CNC head set:

- Ferrea Valve guides
- Ferrea Valves(CNC heads got Supertech)
- Ferrea Valve stem seats
- Supertech Valve springs and Retainers(CNC heads got Ferrea)
- 7 degree valve locks

I would post a picture, but I have only a video. They look beautiful with the polish!
Mike(Oracle) spent 175 man hours on these!

We will have the results for the Man vs Machine J32 Head contest next week! Both heads are going to be flowed on the same benchflow.

Very excited to see the results!

Did a bit of much needed cleaning in anticipation of the engine and tranny going back into the engine bay.

I will one day have the NBP Turbo TL painted KBP.

The 1/4” dial-type torque wrench is in. This will be part of the preload tester tool.

EBC Yellow brakes are in for Track Day @ PIR April 30!

Rasps are in for deburring modifies metals.

More organized

why the fuck would you paint it KBP? If going to the trouble of a color change at least do Midori or Blaze Orange or another loud cool Honda color.

Midori looks like baby poop nad the Blaze orange pops too hard. My favorite color is blue and I have wanted the KBP since I fell in love with the 3G TL. KBP is a stock TL-S color, so it would keep with the OEM look. I may paint two TLs KBP Eventually.

I will paint my garage in the next few weeks. Then paint a massive "A" Acura emblem on the wall in KBP Car paint.

Those are nice blues too. Difference shades of blue are good. It’s so early in the paint process. I appreciate form and function, but I’m function over form.

function always comes first...
now if you'd have been okay with an oil change and maybe tb job we could have that thing in the booth already
I just mean to go to such great lengths to paint it a color you see a billion times on other TL seems boring to me.
and TBH I don't really like KBP. Yeah, I said it. CBP was always the UA7 I wanted.

I will go as heavy on form as I currently am function when it’s time. I can’t get enough of that deep sky blue with silver metallic KBP color.
If I was 1% like CulO, would be doing both form and function. But money is a limiting factor.

My brothers 3G is CBP, I like it but it’s kinda meh.

Acura TL Builder, just curious.
Would you happen to have an up close picture of the trans. case, like the one you provided before, without the JBWeld applied?

lol, why, might it be just fine because it was merely a hairline crack that didn’t do any damage and the JB weld is a courtesy just to keep the oil in?

Unfortunately, I didn’t take one, But the damage is so minimal there should not be any issue in the future. But I sure am learning a lot about trannies now, and continue to!

Why do you ask though Sir?

I believe you that it was a hairline crack. I was just wondering if any 'deformation' in the aluminum could be seen on the outside. The more information that can be gleaned from this makes the thread richer in substance.

BTW, take heart, though, not only are you learning a lot about trannies; however, more importantly, you will be the first active member to document the 'preload' process on this forum.

Some have talked, as I displayed in the 'tip' quotes previously; but, you will actually show and describe this important process. Kind of like the 'brother' clutch repalcement. Potential future google searches will catch the 'preload' tag and many will visit and observe your Acura TL Builder journey as you proceed.

At work this week I was asked by someone much more “learn-Ed” than I why anyone would build an Automatic TL.

Well*Neil Degrasse Tyson voice*,

- The physical limitation of an Acura TL 3G 6MT is 203mph on OEM size tires.

- The physical limitation of an Acura TL 3G 5AT is 248mph on OEM size tires.

This means that a fully built engine and transmission of one of my 5AT TLs(though I have yet to read of anyone doing so), will potentially be able to outrun all but a few Super/Hyper cars.

If I can remember or recall, from being here over the years, something someone (profile name) said in a particular thread topic, I use the 'Search this Thread' functionality at the top of each thread.

Click on it, the general 'search' window opens, then I click the 'Advance Search' function and the search ability expands widely to 'Keyword'; 'Username' and even 'Find Posts from'.

I mainly use 'Keywords' / keyword variations and 'Username' to find most of the stuff I use to back up / reinforce the points I want to make in textual conversations here if possible.

For instance, that 'Turbo TL' thread I found the stuff related to the 'tips' for dealing with working on MT transmissions. That is a huge thread full of a lot info. and I remembered that that was buried in there somewhere and the 'Search this Thread' found it, quickly, to benefit this (your) thread many years later.

Anyone can say anything, blah, blah, blah; however, when one can resurrect some decade old post, on a current discussion, to lend relevant information to an obscure topic, that is the essence of credibility.

Though, 'searching' is a tedious task, more often than not, after a while of searching, if I just can't 'find' what I'm looking for but know it's out there, I'll say fv( - it and move on.

Thank you Zeta. I will let them know that(didn’t know that myself)

My friend Ilya and I are working on his P2R CNC’d heads. The shop where the owner owns a few NSXs, including a J-Series NSX for the Wife, lost Many of the parts on the heads. The solid dowel pins on the heads were reinstalled on the wrong side.

This shop royally screwed Ilya over. They then charged him $550 to tune the car and told him his car is messed up and isn’t making power after 5k rpm.

He’s got the complete OEM faux CF Interior!

His TL-S is from Canada, so his temp is in Celsius and his speedometer is Kilometers.

Ilya with this TL has the RV6 exhaust so I was going to do a critic of it this weekend. He allowed me to drive it yesterday and I happily agreed! On the drive something seemed off about the sound. Though he had his valves adjusted in an odd manner.

We stayed up all night working on his car. He has a wedding to go to so we were pulling an nighter. We tore intot the heads to find the valves SO poorly adjusted it makes me feel like they were never adjusted before. The hollow dowel pins in the heads were gone, the solid dowels were on the wrong side of the Vtec actively closing the oil flow to completely disallow VTEC.

We went in and changed the dowel pins and added the missing ones from my spare parts in the shed,

When the car was started it sounded like a purring cat! What a nice sound that car and exhaust made! I look forward to ordering RV6s exhaust!

Now the VTEC is back and going strong!! Ilya is very happy, he even bought me dinner the night of! He is a good guy and very grateful, unlike some others Ive done gratis work for.

I learned how to do a valve adjustment, how to add and remove the dowel pins in the heads. Its amazing stuff!

Helms manual for proper Dowel pins install on J-Series Heads.

The technique employed by Rich performance in Seattle. This guy has four NSXs, one of which is J series powered! How could they!

Got an email from Acurapartswarehouse.com that the 6MT tranny case is “Discontinued/on backorder”. Now what?

Try OEMAcuraParts.com?

If you ever have to remove the Solid dowel pins from the heads without removing them(otherwise use an oven). The best technique I found was to use a good heat gun on the aluminum that houses the pin on the head(first apply penetrating oil and let it sit a few minutes. After two minutes of heat, immediately follow with ice pack directly on the pins(don’t let the cold touch the aluminum. The steel pins won’t pop from the sudden temperature change. Then use a locking vise grip and lock the clamp down as tight as you can while keeping The jaws a 1 to 2 millimeters away from the aluminum head as to not damage it. After you lock the vise grip, use a short left to right twist motion as you pull the pin upwards.

Worked great for me!

For reinstall, heat the aluminum area and place a little lube, line up the pin symmetrically and tap tap tap it in. If you feel any resistance on its travel down, remove pin and apply more heat.

Go to hondapartsnow and enter 21200-RAT-020, maybe they will have it like your buddies clutch case?
The Honda Accord 03-07 6MT shares the same part #, check it out.
Not much you can do if they are discontinued.
