Thumbs down XM rates up due to royalties

Just got this email, thought I'd share this with everyone just in case some ya'll are about to renew. I think this sucks btw.

Music royalty rights were established by the U.S. Congress as part of the Copyright Act. This Act requires payment of copyright music royalties to recording artists, musicians and recording companies who hold copyrights in sound recordings.

These royalties have recently increased dramatically, principally as a result of a decision made by the Copyright Royalty Board, which is designated by the Library of Congress to set royalty rates for sound recordings. Beginning on July 29, 2009, a “U.S. Music Royalty Fee” of $1.98/month* for primary subscriptions and $.97/month* for multi-receiver subscriptions will be effective upon your next renewal. This fee will be used directly to offset increased payments from XM to the recording industry.

Unfortunately, we cannot control the Copyright Royalty Board's rate increase, but we can offer you ways to save on your subscription. The longer your subscription, the more you save!

Even more reason not to pay for satellite radio. That shit should be free like the radio is. Only time will tell and i'm sure when enough people give up on it, they'll make it free..

It applies to radio, too. You just aren't paying for it...yet. When the radio stations decide to close up shop, we'll all suffer.

Yes you are paying for it. Perhaps not in money, but in time. It means more commercials, less music to offset the cost. No radio station will go out of buisness...

This is exactly why I got rid of my second radio, and gave the primary subscription to my wife. Another $3/month?! Are you friggin' kidding me?!

I canceled mine a few months ago and now they call me once a month with offers. The latest was $20 for 6 months of service.

Just call and say you want to cancel and they'll bend over backwards to keep you.

I let mine run out after the 3 months of free service I got when I bought the car.

It was ok, I listened to it, but it wasn't worth the monthly cost to me.

I for one enjoy xm, I hear music on there way sooner than on fm and no commercials...well for the most part. GD channel, XMU, Area 81 etc...

If satellite radio was 'free' they would have to have commercials. AM/FM is 'free' because of the commercials.

Guess you do not have cable/satellite tv either-have to pay for that also and that should be free.

Sounds great! 3 bucks extra for crappy mainstream music that I can get on FM!

I'm going to let it run out as well unless they give me the $20 for 6 months deal again.

I find myself channel surfing all the time. For example, BPM. I expect to hear some good dance music that isn't remixes of Pink and Lady Gaga. If I want that I'll tune into the pop channels!

Radio stations get paid by how many people listen, just like anything else.

You're kidding yourself if you think radio stations won't or can't go out of business.

They talked to me about doing a lifetime subscription, but I didn't pull the trigger on it. They wouldn't credit me for my first year's fees, so I said forget it. To be honest, I wasn't sure if they were going to survive. Now I kinda wish I did it.

People who have iphone integration... do yourself a favor and get rid of XM unless you guys have it for Howard Stern, XM nav traffic or some other stuff like that Just stream Pandora. Much better quality sound, more options and much better sound as well.

Im not renewing my XM subscription.

Did the lifetime deal about 6 months ago (XM plus best of Sirius plus online streaming). Wouldn't have done it if Sirius didn't get the $300 million.

My car came with XM still active...Called and got the $77/year deal in December of 2007, membership was supposed to die out in December 2008...Well here we are Sept 2009 and i still have XM in my car. Have yet to be charged for anything, nor will i let them charge me for anything since i never re-newed it.

Guess i fell through the cracks when they merged

Only listen to 3-4 channels on it anymore anyways.

How much was the lifetime deal?

I don't know about most of you, but I could care less if they do go under. Only reason why I wouldn't want them to though is because I have stocks in them lol; however, I hate that it is becoming just like regular radio. I keep hearing about "no advertisement" then "no advertisement on music channels" and now, I hear more freaking ads on satellite than I do on regular FM channels. Specially those stupid f'n dynobite crap.

Excellent suggestion!

Interesting. I renewed in January and didn't know about that one either. I wonder what the fine print is on the "lifetime" deal?

None that I could find. That rate includes Best of Sirius and online streaming. There is a $75 charge if you transfer the subscription to another receiver, but they were upfront about that. Not really an issue for me because I keep cars for a very long time. Buying cars is such a losing proposition!

Now you may be able to get it for less, may be not.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if there was a way to transfer if you get another car.
