Why dont we have RDS on FM?

I mean my mom's shitty stereo replacement even has RDS, and here Acura took all this time to do a good job and everything. Did they want to make XM seem more apealing, only giving XM the ability to view song names while its being played?

Well for are you inventors out there listen up... make a FM modulator for the ipod that hooks through its data port and then have it broadcast the RDS info to the radio. Beat that BMW :-P if someone found a way to unlock RDS on the radio please let me know!!!

Thanks

You have a point, neo. However, who listens to broadcast radio when XM is so much better? I sure don't. (Except for my local NPR affiliate, which I support financially)

I'd certainly agree with this statement. My trial to XM recently expired. I thought I'd try the local stations and I would not miss XM. WRONG. I'm hooked now. Love those non-commercial music channels!

I am surprised that RDS is still not available. My Mountaineer does not have much, but has RDS. It is a cool feature.

yup, RDS would definitely be cool! i think most Nissans with the BOSE systems have it -- i have it on my 02 Pathfinder.

maybe through an upgrade via the PC-Slot, who knows?!

OK, I will ask the question...What is RDS? I am trying to come up with matching words, but nothing that makes sense. I doubt I have it on any of my radios if I have not heard of it. My Odyssey has the AMS feature ( I think it is AMS). This is the ability to automatically scan the FM frequencies and temp. program the selectors. Really good when drive to new area and want to find stations. And the good thing is you turn it off when you get home and pick up your original saved stations.

RDS-Radio Data System. It allows the station and sometimes the song played to be displayed on the radio itself.

I too miss it from my Altima days (and I too support my local NPR affiliate financially )
I've heard though that they're starting to advertise on it though... Can anyone verify this?

well the only reason why I would want RDS is so I could have better integration with my ipod... my dad's bmw has it to and I think its a pretty cool feature (as well as something called PTY that is for local stations, never sed it though).

XM is starting to grow on me but im still pretty shy with that whole thing (i was listening to one song that i hated on 20, went to 21 and it was the same god damn song, swtiched to 22 and it was something different but then the next song was the same god damn song... maybe it was one of those once in a lifetime flooks, but still reminded me of 102.7 Kiis, where i regularly hear the hit song prb 6 times in a day... no variety. Now my parents love the earlier years and they have a pretty good selection.

awell just a rant.

I was also suprised that I couldn't find RDS on this almost perfect system. Adding RDS, CD Text and MP3 capability to this system would have cost very little extra and been a icing on the cake. XM has a pretty good mix and I plan on subscribing soon (my trial ran out earlier this month), but there are a few segments on local radio morning shows that are entertaining. Also, I really don't see XM as being that much better quality than FM. The traffic/weather stations are horrible.

If the head unit is capable of receiving RDS, then Honda can just modify the software in the navi unit to show RDS.

XM radio quality leaves something to be desired when compared to FM radio.
The lack of commercials almost makes up for it though.
The missing RDS is amazing considering all the technology built into the TL.

Hell, a buddys 2000 Monte Carlo has RDS, fer crying out loud!

Just curious, I noticed that when I'm listening to XM, I can see the song info. Is that considered RDS also? If so, why cant i see this on FM?

XM and FM RDS and two totally different animals.

I personally don't think it's a big deal. Just because GM puts RDS in a 2000 Monte Carlo doesn't really mean anything. GM puts Onstar in their cars, does that mean we should have it. I'm not quite sure if I understand that reasoning. I'm sure there are things Acura has that the 2000 Monte Carlo does not. To me the lack of RDS is not a big deal. I had it in past Audi's and it's not a big deal. I'd rather see manufactures putting in digital radio over analog RDS.
