Sound System Pop

Took the 04 (2,200 miles on the odometer) on a road trip with the GF and noticed several loud "pops" coming from the sound system. Only noticed it when we had a DTS CD playing (3 different ones and it happened on all.) Never happened in XM mode, or regular CD. Played around with the speaker mix and even turned the sub all the way down to try and isolate the noise, but couldn't. This popping noise was loud, the first few times we thought a rock had hit the car and were looking for divots in the windshield. Finally figured out it was coming from the speakers, the GF thought it was front right, then left, then the back, so you get the idea that we couldn't isolate it. Doesn't happen around town, just at highway speed. Anyone have this happen to them or have any ideas? Figure I'll have the dealer look at it, but don't know if they'll be able to replicate as it's pretty sporadic.

Could this popping be related to the CD? Sometimes when i play my burned cd's (either the quality of cd or others) makes this popping noise, but when i turn the radio on the popping is gone

I've read elsewhere the people are hearing this "pop" with commerical DTS-CDs as well. It's beleived to be a problem with the error handling of the DTS-CD processor. Just a note, I've never heard this sound from regular CDs (Burned or retail), or have I heard it from any of my DVD-As.

Most of us believe that this is just a bug with the DTS processor not getting a clear stream from the DTS disc. Not a big deal, it's always going to happen, just depends on clean the stream is.

Just to clarify, these we're 3 different commercial DTS CD's. Didn't hear it when we had regular Tom Petty CD crankin. Haven't tried a DVD-A to see if it happens. I'll try that next. Seems to only happen at highway speed though, you'd think if it was a DTS decoder issue it would/could happen anytime. Also thought it might somehow be a static electricity buildup issue related to the BS EL-42's not grounding properly :-)

Should also note that the same DTS CD's play quite well in DTS on the home surround system, so that rules out the discs as the culprit.

Again, it's most likely the quality of the decoder and its error correcting algorithm, if it has one. If the car misreads the disc at a certain area, ideally the EC will take care of it, but if it misses it, it'll click and pop.

I've also noticed this when playing DTS-CD's. It has yet to happen with any other CDs/DVD-A's. I just stopped playing DTS-CD's.

Hey, I just noticed the same thing. On my drive back from Augusta on Saturday I had the Police cranked. Coincidentally, it's DTS and I was getting these quick, loud sounds like a huge bug or small rock hit the window, but louder. I thought the disc was scratched or something, but I put it directly from the case to the changer and have not removed it since. I've listened to it while sitting still and never heard the same noises...

OK....so here's probably a dumb question. IS DVD-A and DTS the same thing? Or is DTS a type of DVD-A as opposed to another type? I know with DVD-Video, there are two distict sound types (Dolby Digital and DTS). Is this the same for DVD Audio?

DVD-A is a type of formatting for the DVD disc, much like DVD-V is a type of format. DTS is an encoding format for audio files that are simply packaged as .WAV files so you can burn them onto a CD disc using a normal disc mastering application.

You cannot put DTS .WAV files on a DVD-A disc.

Still not following (sorry)....So is a CD with 'wav' files on it in DTS format? Any sites you know of where I can take a look/educate myself?

No.

A CD is compiled of .WAV files that are normal PCM format.

However, a DTS CD is compiled also of .WAV files, but instead of normal PCM, they are encoded with a DTS encoder and simply named as .WAV so the mastering program thinks it's just a normal .WAV file.

OK...and apparantly then you can play a DTS-CD on the TL player....Is the sound better than a standard CD? Is it multi-channel? And how do I buy one or can I only burn them myself. If I am annoying you just don't reply. Sorry to be thick!

Yes, you can play DTS CDs in the TL because the TL knows that it's 1) an audio CD and 2) instead of normal WAV files it has DTS-encoded WAV files.

The sound is not "better" than a normal CD. The sound is, however, separated into 5.1 distinct channels. The .1 is the LFE channel, a mono channel generally used by the subwoofer.

OK...THANKS! Making more sense....I checked out the site too. ANyone know specifically what software I need (the guide is a little ambiguous) to try to convert a normal CD to a DTS? Looks like Be-Sweet....but possibly Be-sweet GUI and Be-SURE????

I'm not really sure you can take a normal stereo .WAV and encode that to a 5.1 channel DTS-encoded .WAV. If you think about it, how are you going to separate the channels yourself?

Agreed.....so then HOW do people make DTS cds? What are they using as inputs? I thought they took a stereo CD and the program converted it. I am obviously missing something

They're taking DVD-V concerts which have DD or DTS encoded soundtracks, demuxing the audio and separating the channels, then re-encoding them in DTS format.

Alternatively you can create your own channels (6 mono streams) and bring them together.

So, the only solution seems to be don't play DTS CD's. I don't find this to be an acceptable solution. If this was happening on my home system, I'd have it fixed. It simply should not happen. Anyone who's had this problem had it fixed or addressed by the dealer?

CD-RWs?

I haven't got my TL yet, so I can't try this; but someone else can...

In my S60 (hold your comments), it will play CD-RWs (the reusable kind). Not many car audio decks will play these. The reason that I bring this up is that I've found that these discs sound much better than CD-Rs. They seem to have more mids and bass. CD-Rs sound too "glossy" for me. I've tried many brands of CD-Rs and found that they all sound very similar. Also, I've never had a CD-RW skip - never. I've had CD-Rs skip numerous times and I don't listen to them very often. I had an audio tech tell me that the "laser interaction" was "more reliable" on the CD-RW. Whatever that means.

I'd be interested to see what would happen if someone burned some DTS wav files to a CD-RW and played it in the TL. I think I read somewhere that the TL would handle these discs. I wouldn't be surprised if this clears up the issue.

I'll give it a try...can't hurt.

Also, I do attend on bringing up the DTS-CD popping noise when I take my TL in for the first service...

Well, this is the second old thread I've replied to today. I tried my very first DTS CD in my system today. The CD was a home-burn of Metallica S&M Disc 1, ripped from the DVD-V and converted to 5.1 DTS WAVs using SurCode. I indeed got the pops, and remembered reading about them here, so I came back and searched. The funny thing is (well, it's not really funny) I can rewind to that same part and it doesn't pop. This happened 3 different times. This was sitting in my garage so that seems to rule out the "highway speed" hypothesis. So, has anyone mentioned this to their dealer?

To the person who asked how they can take a 2channel CD and burn it into 5.1multichannel sound, the answer is the engineer's use the master 24 track...or higher tapes, then using a multichannel mixing console, they mix and match the sound to the taste of the engineer of the day. The results are mixed at best depending on the skill of the engineer. There are very few "true" 5.1 music mixes out there, mostly audiophile stuff, or concert DVD's mixed down for DVD-A. For a good source of excellent material, try AIX...it's a company that has been mentioned on this forum, and they make excellent if not superb 5.1DVD-A disc's. I recently purchased 2 plus the free sampler disc they give out, and was just blown away by the quality of the sound in the TL. This car has one awesome sounding audio system...it just needs quality source material to make it shine. Check this company out and buy a few of their disc's...you won't be sorry. I'm so confident that you'll like their stuff...if you buy a disc and don't like it...and I don't already have it...I'll buy it back from you!! Now that is one confident statement guys.....check out this company.

Hello, this is my first thread....I got my TL 6MT with navi, anthracite./ebony. I was driving on the highway listening to the Police DTS when i heard this loud pop, it happened twice in 10 minutes, i thought it was 2 rocks hitting the windshield....thought this way until reading this forum, considered that it may be the stereo.....doesn't happen with XM, radio, cds....actually have listened to the DTS DVD twice through and this is the first time that it happeded......it seems like it something with the system reading the DTS as it seems that it only occurs with this media. Will keep driving and reading for further info

Has anyone found a solution to the DTS CD popping problem? I have over 100 DTS CD's and some of them play just fine. Others pop like crazy. I have some others that don't. All CD's with labels will pop. I have problems with Fuji CDR's. I will try a different brand and let people know. PS does anyone know someone that can burn DTS CD's From DTS DVD tracks?

I have actually heard the loud clicks/pops and thoguht it was the CD I was listening too, but I've heard it while listening radio on and with the audio system turned off as well. The first few times, I also thought it was a rock hitting my car, but I've noticed it happening several times while in traffic going less than 10 mph. Has anyone experienced the noise outside of a disc too?

I got a crackling noise once on a DTS disc ("Venus and Mars" by Wings). Ejected the disc, had the passenger clean it, and put it back in and it worked fine. Weird. I've never had the issue again.

I have the same issue on the Police DTS CD. I had no idea DTS CDs were CDs. I thought they were DVDs encoded with DTS instead of Dolby Digital. What a surprise.
