I am searching for more DVD-As, and now see more titles in SACD (some sort of Super Audio Quality CD).
Has anyone used these in the TL (I have a '04 TL)?
What was the quality like?
How did it compare to true DVD audio?

Don't quote me on this but I believe the SACD's aren't compatible with the TL. They'll play on the system, but as a regular cd. The best place to buy DVD-A's are at cduniverse.com. They seem to have the biggest selection.

 

SACD's will not play in the system unless they're hybrid discs meaning it has both the SACD version and the CD version. There is also DualDisc - CD on one side and DVD-A or DVD-V on the other and ELS will not support DVD-V. If you decide tp purchase DualDisc, read the back of the case to view the content: it should say DVD-Audio and not DVD-Video. Most of the new releases on DualDisc is DVD-V.

There are several online sites that have a decent selection of DVD-A's, however you will not find any current albums. Here are some others: Digital Eyes, DVD Planet, DVD Empire, Acoustic Sounds and AIX Records.

I got 2 dualdiscs today. NIN - The downward spiral.. and Good Charlotte - The Young and the Hopeless... The NIN dvd played in the 05 tl well have in the showroom ( I work at an Acura dealer) the Good Charlotte did not. I looked on the back of both cases and the NIN said "this disc is intended to play on dvd-audio" while the other does not say anything.

 

It probably does, look for the DVD symbol and below it should indicate video. It's small and hard to read. On that same line it should have the Doldy Digital Symbol, NTSC, and record labels. I brought my magnifier with me to make sure I knew what I was getting.

 

You may want to be careful with DualDiscs. Stereophile reported that they are a smidgen thicker than normal CDs/SACDs/DVD-As. Could be a problem in an in-dash stereo.

 

Any SONY DualDisc will not have a DVD-A side.

Hopefully, most DualDiscs by other labels will have a DVD-A side. You have to read the backs carefully. Look for the "Advanced Resolution" logo, although it might not always be there.

SACDs are SONY's version of HiRez, based on the CD as opposed to DVD. They will not play in surround in the TL, and will only play the stereo redbook layer if one exists. The SACD must say Hybrid, or indicate that it will play on a CD player for it to work in the TL in CD Stereo.
