Radar detectors

any of you guys use radar detectors on your tls?

i was wondering about them, i would only want one that would be ez to hide and turn off if i do actually get pulled over......

are you guys who use them, recomend them?
Do they work well?
are they easy to conceal and turn off quickly?

I don't have a radar, but my friend has the Passport 8500 X50. Its one of the best detectors on the market. Works real well. Its easily taken off the windshield when needed. You might want to look into that. Good Luck with the search.

I use a Valentine One, I've had it for 7 years now. Valentine One + Careful Driving = No Tickets.

I've used many other detectors, but none of them lasted this long or worked this well.

The secret to speeding ticket avoidance is to BE ALERT and DRIVE SMART. I generally drive pretty fast, but do not use a radar detector. My last speeding ticket was in 1972 and I intend to keep it that way.

don't bother wasting ur $$$$ on radar / laser detectors...... they do work.... only if the "copper" is NOT "acquiring" YOUR speed.

On the other hand.....if the "copper" IS "acquiring" YOUR SPEED. It's too late.... by the time your little handy dandy...radar / laser detector is "screaming" he/she already has your speed.......dialed in.

Save ur....hard earned money on other stuff.

what do you mean by acquiring your speed? like do radar guns lag or do they have a distance limit?

The lag is a very short fraction of a second (Almost instant).

The problem with Laser speed measuring devices is that the beam of invisible light is very small and does not spread out like a radio wave (Conventional radar).

The only chance you have and it is very slim is that the light beam will bounce off another car or object before your car is targetted and that beam would it that less then 1 square inch area where the sensor is mounted on the front or your radar detector.

As far as distance limit, most state laws oblige the offcier to be able to identify the driver at the time they are aquiering a vehicle speed hence limiting Laser Radars to visual range (1,000 feet and less). The Laser type radars have better range then conventional radars use for speed enforcement.

I have a friend who is an officer and they used to clock planes taking off from a local airport with a laser radar for fun when it was in the air at over 5 miles when they were not tooo busy.

Best regards

frecnhnew

Google for Radar Detector Test, you will find tons of good informations.

Had many radar detectors over the years. Last one I had was the most up-to-date Valentine 1. It saved me many of times and the arrow indicators were the best feature. It was $399 brand-new and I had it for 10-mths. Once I got my new TL I didn't want to constantly have to hide it and take it down etc.... I then checked Ebay and decided to sell it because the going rate was over $300. I figured I was able to "rent" it for almost a year at $100 bucks and it saved my a$$ many of times. If I wanted a new one in the future I would get one. I now drive a little more defensive and if Valentine 1 comes out with a smaller/sleeker product, I may purchase one if and when that time comes. Had an Escort, Belltronics, K40 and lastly the V1. If you are going to buy one...SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY TO GET THE ARROWS.....HUGE ASSET AND HELPFULL FEATURE. WHY?

Well, say you go to work the same route everyday (most people do)...you pass some bogus alarms that alert your V1 day in and day out. You will memorize where these false alarms are coming from, which only can be done with the V1 detector. After awhile you may just ignore these alerts because they happen every single day! WELL, the radar has the technology to show MULTIPLE alarms and the direction of them at the same time. HUGE BENEFIT THAT NO OTHER RADAR can provide.

No I don't work for them and I don't even own the V1 anymore. I do miss it now and then and my be a buyer of one down the line. Hope this helps and sorry about going on and on about nothing....

Question

How about a laser jammer like Blinder M-20 or M-40? I was thinking about getting one of those.

What do you guys think?

Thanks, Mark.

i have the v1 1.8 version and i love it...resale value of these also do not depreciate unless a new model comes out but usually that occurs after a year of ownership

my gf has the escort and im not use to it because of the "arrows" that the v1 provides...really makes it easier in telling you where the radar is coming from...

one thing to remember is that...you have to be alert!

and

if cops really want to catch you they turn off and on to get your speed. they dont leave it on so that the radar detector can detect it...they "shoot" at you when they see you thus sometimes your detector cannot detect it fast enough and your too late to brake

hope that helps

I still use a passport in my car. I happen to live in an area where the locals still "camp out" on the side of the street blasting radar down the road. No instant on in my area. So I still tend to pick up lots of legit signals around town. Since I have so much warning I make sure that I am not over the limit. I generally am not that much over the limit but this just makes sure I am not part of a monthly quota.

Laser is starting to appear and no detector is going to work on that since there really isn't any time to react. It is just plain scary stuff.

I did think about updating the detector but that would be more for a "security blanket" since I have used them for so long. I feel "naked" without it. If you aren't hooked like me then your best way is to be alert and don't speed alone. Don't be first in line either.

i have to agree and completly disagree with you.....Radar Detectors are not a waste of money. i do agree that against a laser, your finished and you stand no chance unless you are driving smart, behind someone or amongst traffic that will help you identify the laser earlier. i personally own the Passport 8500 X50 and i love it...especially the blue...yea i got suckered into paying the extra for the blue Lighting *RIPOFFS*....but it was worth every penny. it saved me many times, as it won't save u all the time, because i got a ticket going 73 in a 50 coming down a long stretch at 10:30 at night with the cop coming other way. they can still decrease the chances of you getting a ticket and points on ur license. so its a worthy investment.

Radio Shack brand for me and the wife, has a compass and has saved me more than once, therefore it has paid for itself many times over ( I may be wrong by Whistler makes it for them under their label)....and don't bother to conceal it, it's not illegal but VA and another State that I can't think of right now....zzz

Well...you should try to conceal it because if you do get pulled over and a cop sees you have the radar detector, that won't help ur chances of getting out of a ticket because that inclines the cop to believe that ur a typical speeder

V1 hardwired with a concealed display module... the main unit is located at the top of the windshield next to the mirror and it's very hard to notice. The display module is located on top of the steering column, and I can take that off in literally 2 seconds if/when I get pulled over.

The directional arrows and the bogey counters are a God-send. Once you go arrows, you will wonder how you ever managed without them. No more of wondering where the cop is when your detector goes off, and how many. It even saved me from 2 laser attacks.

But when you're on the road by yourself with no traffic, you're screwed either way. Gotta speed smart.

Even the V1 couldn't save me on my last ticket... I was going 90 in 65, came up over a hill and there was a cop in front of me in the same lane about a 1/4-mile up ahead. As I got closer, I saw the antennas on the trunk but it was too late. V1 went off on Ka full strength and I was already toast by then.

Even the best detector can't beat a pair of good eyes. If you relied on it too much, you will get screwed, just like me.

Actually, Blinder brand is the only one legal. It sends a light beam out. And that is not illegal.

obviously you have never been stopped by a cop, I've had radars as far back as when FOX was on the top of the list, anyways a cop will not judge you if he sees a radar on your dash since it will not only warn you if there is a cop ahead but also construction, lane closings etc, so believe me with over a few million miles driven, I can say that if you're caught speeding or driving over the posted speed limit, it's your attitude that can get you off. Example here, drove 125 mph on a 25 mph in Ossining NY, cop said that he would have to lower the speed on the ticket because his supervisor wouldn't believe it...$60 fine, stopped doing 140 on a 65 mph MA Pike, cop said slow down and let me go, he was not aware of my speed but saw me pull hard from the guy in front of me, I said yes OFFICER and he let me go, stopped doing 50 on a 35 in Spfld MA, said my mom was sick and had to get there fast, with a SIR somewhere in my sentence, he let me go, radar in sight so.. do what you want just giving you my ...now did I tell you my wife got pulled for doing 50 on a 25 mph school zone, same thing she was polite and said that she was preocupied with something personal....

i have been pulled over 3 times in my lifetime....one time for accidentally running a red light, the left turn go light turned green so the person in front of me went accidentally and i wasn't paying attention and followed him until i realized i went through a red light...luckily...there was a cop there to pull me over , the 2nd time i was going like 40 in a 25 but the cop gave me a warning. the 3rd time the cop catches me doing 76 in a 50 going down a long straight away...200 dollar ticket and 4 points.....i have my radar detector up behind the tint strip and the wire going from the outlet because i want it up higher but the cop couldn't see it, so he searches my car for tints, tail light tints, looks at my aluminum pedals....shit like that...i understand where you might confuse me for someone who has never been pulled over...but you are 47....where you are older and cops tend to respect older men then younger kids...me being 17. a cop (not all) but just what some cops do, they look at a kid with a nice car, body kit, rims, and other tweaked out things...ESPECIALLY a radar detector will automatically assume that this kid is a car enthusiast and will speed more than often...so there is my point...its easier for a 47 year old man to talk his way out of a ticket then a 17 year old.....

Radar's are useless when going over 90 mph. I have an escort 8500 x50. It served me well in my Avalon, but I've yet to bother with putting it on my Acura. It really only works well when the roads are flat and straight for decent distances - in RI/MA area where I'm usually cruising around, the roads are anything but that. They're annoying as hell in the city.

you are so right sir, the only time I was pulled over and clocked was in Ossining, there he had the "instant on" and i didn't have enough time to slow down, the other times was just driving and they didn't have radar guns either...

Ummm radar detectors detect radar. They don't protect you from tickets, instant on mode or Laser (99% of the time if your laser warning goes off, you're the only one being clocked). Use your common sense and good judgment along with a V1 and you'll be as safe as you can be.

Driving 90 in a 55 zone is asking for some rehabilitation.
