Question about keyless entry key fob
I know you have to have to keys programmed at Acura and its expensive. I know it takes a special machine to cut our keys lol.
However I do have a question. The other day I was wondering where the microchip was in the key and took mine apart all the way down to the chip that sits under the unlock buttons. Is this the chip that is linked to vehicle (in the ignition system) the same chip or is in the the plastic that key itself attaches to?
My understanding is that there is a frequency for the keyless entry but there is also a pairing between the key and vehicle. I could be wrong.
I have a place around here that can cut the key and obviously if i don't have to go to Acura (not close) I don't want to. If i simply swap these microchips would it be the same thing as having it programmed at Acura?

I was going to start my own thread about this issue, but found yours. I am down to one key fob and want to buy an uncut one off EBAY. Problem is: the Acura dealership wants to hose me for ~$250 (they will not accept outside keys, so I have to buy one of theirs ($90) and another $160 or so to program and cut the damn thing). WTH? For a key???
I'm looking for advice: Any workarounds that will save me $$$?
Let's start with the "special" key cutting machine. Who (besides Acura) has one that will cut this type of key?
BTW, I have a 2007 Acura MDX
Also,
What type of equipment do I need to program the key (so I can turn the engine)?

I got an locksmith to order an OEM Driver 2 key. With it cut and programed as the second key it was $150. Without the chip programed to the car the car will shut off even if you have a correctly cut key. You could however get an extra key cut just to open the door for cheap.
