Nokia 6620 Bluetooth Verdict....It Sucks!!!
Nokia 6620 Bluetooth Verdict....It Sucks!!!
I got mine yesterday, charged it, programmed it, and tried to use it with the hands free link....
1. No battery or signal strength indicators.
2. No notification of call waiting. You have no idea when a call comes through.
3. Each time you get in the car, you have to go into the phone's menu and turn on the hands-free link connection.
4. The phone will not switch over to HFL if you have a headset plugged into the phone.
5. Thats enough for me - the phone goes back to AT&T tomorrow.
I'm sticking with my Ericsson 637. I'm not crazy about the small buttons, but I can't find a phone that stacks up to it. Dollar for dollar, feature for feature its the best thing available with AT&T or Cingular.
BTW, the Nokia 6620 is a very cool phone. The display, the features, the camera (with 2X zoom), and much more make it a very cool device, but not for the Acura TL.

My 6820 seems to be working as it should with the exception of signal strength and battery life indicators on the MID. However, since I leave the phone plugged into the center console's DC supply, I don't need to know battery condition. Signal strength would be nice, but, it's not there. The phone, btw, has great audio both from the car and listening to it inside the car. The phones sensitivity is also much better than my old Motorola i60 I had while with Nextel. I plan on keeping the 6820. I have heard of too many problems with the v710.
I suggest try the SE T637, great signal strength, great HFL compatibility, and a nice small form factor at the same time. Nokias are strong phones, but as of late I have seen their quality go down.

I second the Sony Ericsson T637. HFL on it works flawlessly, and displays signal strength and battery level indicator. My service is with ATT in the DC Metro area. Also you should get a car charger as Bluetooth drains the battery much faster.

Have you noticed what happens when you get another call while talking on the HFL? With the 6620, I got no indication that a call was coming, so I kept missing calls. That sucked.

It's the internet, come on now, lighten up.To Answer your question blacklab, first check your firmware version: *#0000#. Then post that. Also, try turning your bluetooth off and then on while the car is searching for your device. and YOU'RE WELCOME.

I am standing by the smartass comment, but sorry about the dickhead comment. I am so disappointed in technology and its promises that I now have no patience or sense of humor. When I enter *#0000#, I get the following:
V 2.14.1
28-06-04
NHL-12
And I will try to turn Bluetooth on and off during the searching process. Also, I looked at the Nokia USA website but there was no mention of a firmware update for the 6620, so I assume that the above version is the lastest. Also, what Bluetooth cell phone do you use? I figure that it hasn't been approved by Acura, but the new 6255i sure looks good. Thanks.

I have to do something well, right?
How long have you had your 6620? Did you buy this phone from Cingular? If so, they should have a warranty exchange program. I would go to the store and see about swapping out with another unit but before you do, doublecheck the firmware version before picking it up. Firmware versions are usually released every 3-4 months and since your firmware is from June of last year, its about time. Chances are, if you call nokia they will ask you for specific problems. You can either ask them if they can do an update, which they will deny any knowledge of or you can tell them your phone is acting up and they will probably do an update.
What phone do I use? Hmm...you should ask that differently....like "How many phones do you have?" or "What phones are you reviewing?"
The phone I am currently using is a Sony Ericsson K700i. The last couple phones I have used/reviewed.... Sony Ericsson P910i & P910a, Sony Ericsson S700i & S710a, Motorola V710, Blackberry 7100T, I forgot, I have reviewed too many. Bluetooth has been giving me headache after headache. I think I need a vacation...hawaii anyone?
...next phone coming in the following days, Nokia 6630 3G handset.

Initially, I tried calling Nokia with questions, including firmware revisions. Of course, after waiting on hold for 30 minutes, I became tired and hung up. Perhaps the firmware is the problem--I will try again. And I will take your advice and tell them that the phone is acting up.
Concerning the 6630, I called Cingular before I got the 6620, but of course they knew nothing about the 6630. And I don't want to get into the same quandry with a Bluetooth phone that won't pair with my TL, so perhaps the 6630 is out also. I really do like the big screen on the 6620/30. One question that no one has been able to answer: can I use any GSM cell phone approved for the US market, or am I obligated to use one only listed on Cingular's web site? The Motorola Razr is cool, but not for $500.)
You seem like an OK person and I really appreciate the help, although I still think that you are a smartass. I will keep you posted.
OK, Mobilzen--
I finally got to Nokia (3 minute wait) and spoke to a really knowledgeable guy named Glen, who just also happened to speak perfect English (located in Florida and not India, a la Dell). He told me that I would have to send the phone to Melbourne, FL, to have the firmware upgraded--no big deal--but he also warned me that the firmware upgrade may not fix the pairing problem with the TL. He did suggest that I try to reset the TL's HFL. Of course, the TL's owner's manual makes no mention of resetting the HFL. Any thoughts?
If this doesn't work, I will attempt to sell the 6620 on ebay and get one that works with the TL.

Cingular company reps are only supposed to sell what the company offers, thus sell what they have now, not what they will be getting. It's the whole revenue/profit talk each company has every fiscal quarter. blah. As for the phone of choice...when you choose a phone, make sure it supports both 850/1900mhz since you are on Cingular networks. If you get a phone that supports 900/1800/1900....your coverage will be cut by quite a bit.
Thanks for the comment on the last sentence. I try to live my life as free as possible.

Since you only had the phone for less than a year, Cingular should be able to switch out one with you under warranty...? Not sure how their warranty program works but that would be a faster avenue for newer firmware rather than sending your phone to Melbourne which in my experience takes about a week to 2 weeks. Doing the firmware may not guarantee any added bonus but it is a good step in determining whether or not to keep the phone.

If you don't want the phone, I guess you could sell it on eBay...or offer it to me and I'll tinker with it.
The 6630 gets here in next week. I'll have to doublecheck the functionality of this with the TL.
Yes, any 850-1900 GSM phone will work for Cingluar. You can just swap your sim card in and off you go. Both of my Nokias work fine with the TL (6310i & 6230), no battery or signal indicators though.
If you haven't, read and follow the steps for pairing w/ other bluetooth devices in your Nokia manual. Then follow the steps for HFL. Not trying to be smartass but the people you can talk to @ Acura, Nokia @ Cingular generally don't know jack unless you get lucky. There is a compatability list here somewhere that tells the phone people have paired. BTW, my 6310i is a few years old and works just fine without a firmware upgrade ever. I would be surprised if that's the problem.
You can buy almost any unlocked GSM phone on ebay or various other places. You can get great information on phones and service providers at
www.howardforums.com Keep reading and trying, it's worth the effort.

If you get lazy once in awhile like me, go to www.nokiahowto.com for an online manual.
Nokia 6620's latest firmware is 4.22 I believe. You really have to convince Nokia to give you the latest firmware, though. People on HowardForums have reported getting the 3.14 firmware which has done nothing for them.
I've been using a 6820 for a while and just got a replacement one today since my old one was on the fritz. I just bought a 6620 today as well (in transit) but after what you just mentioned I think I'll return it. Not worth the hassle esp if the 6820 works decently well, huh?
