need advice on wiring problem

i have my radar detector setup on the top of my dashboard - http://harrier.itc.if.ua/~chris/IMGP0654.JPG i know it's not the best location for the detector, but i can't stand stuff dangling from my windshield, so i'm gonna leave it on the dash. worst case scenario my lawyer will get some extra money from me to get rid of the ticket

currently i have it plugged in into the socket in the small compartment in front of the stick - http://harrier.itc.if.ua/~chris/IMGP0663.JPG i don't mind the wire going down from the dashboard, but i don't like the look of the open compartment. did anyone do something interesting in that situation ? maybe drilling a hole in the compartment door ? or maybe something less destructive ? i checked couple of threads on hardwiring the detector and going the other direction towards the windshield and routing it there looks like another option, but i wonder if something can be done in the configuration i have ...

thanks !

I'm doing it like you. You can't close the door with anything plugged in the power outlet in the front compartment.

Maybe Rat Shack sells a low-profile 12V plug?

I KNEW I should have gotten a G35!!! They have a power tap on the outside right of the console under the glove compartment.

(not really)

man, are you always online ? i think rat shack might have L-shaped plug, so it would fit insed of the compartment, but that still won't fix the fact that the wire should come out somehow ...

and for G35, man, those things are ugly .... no offense to anyone, i heard they are blast to drive, but i question nissan styling ...

you could probably buy a new socket, mount it on the side, somewhere near the pedals, and wire it to the current socket... best thing to do would be to hardwire it though.. and might be easier

I would hardwire it. That is what I have done on the last 3 cars. This way you do not have to worry about the wire dangling down and you can also free up that power socket for anything else that you might need it for later on.

Yes. I am Soopa's computerized Mega Mod. I simulate human responses.

I have a vast library of Q & As. There is nothing new under the sun. Every time a NooB joins up and asks a question, I just go to the data base of canned responses .

If I can't find an answer there, I use the Magic 8-ball.

The 8-ball says: "Move this thread to Bluetooth, Navi, Audio & Video section."

A little solder, 2 long 12 gauge wire, and a Add-A-Circuit to the fuse box.. and you're set..

If you don't mind cutting up the power cord, you can easily hardwire the radar to the car. The Add-A-Circuit doesn't require any wire cutting on the car itself, so you won't be voiding any warranties that way. This way, u'll be able to close the compartment, and you can relocate the radar higher on ur windshield.. without having some wires dangling all over the place

I did this w/ my Escort 8500 x50. Just cuz the original plug was a telephone cord, doesn't mean it was any easier since I spliced it into the "smart" whatever-device thing (no idea what it's called). Shinj1EVA,

it sounds like a good solution. i think i'm gonna keep the detector on the dashboard (i like it there ) and run the wire towards the windshield first, tuck it in under the dashboard (i hope it's possible without taking anything out, but i'll have to take a look), running it to the fuze box and wiring it somewhere there.

i have one question though, why bother with all the LEDs and a little switch ? i like to have my detector on when my car is running. on my previous car the 12V outlet was on all the time even if ignition was off, which was kinda inconvinient for me since i didn't want to swith the detector on and off all the time. so i don't mind having it hardwired without a switch. and if i have to turn it off, there is a button on the detector. is there anything else behind it that i don't see ? also you can turn it off by using window lock button

also i want to find some other fuse that will provide power on constantly without a benefit of window lock/unlock feature

now how to straighten up the spiral power cord for the detector i have ?

The switch for the detector is the mute button, so it doesn't keep beeping. It's not to switch the power to the detector on and off. As it's set up right now, it's only on when the ignition's on. I figure that only makes sense since you really can't be speeding when the engine isn't on...

As far as your cord issue, you need to cut it, splice on some straight wires that you can just buy from radio shack or almost any other store. If you need me to splice the wires for you, let me know.. I do solder work on video game consoles a few hours a day and splicing wires is no problem for me
