my DVD/PS2 Set up idea....opinions?

well....i think i have found the most financially fit and best bang for the buck idea for a navi conversion so i can play DVD's while in my car.

Products:
(1) PS2 Slim
(2) Wireless PS2 Controllers
(1) DomOfNav Navigation Conversion Kit
(1) FM Modulator/Transmitter
+ all the wiring and labor

that would be what i need to buy, i am thinking i can fit the PS2 slim in the glovebox because from what ive heard it fits . and with that without all of the wires id get the wireless controllers which im sure would suck up battery life but HEY...its cool..id get the Navi Conversion installed and have the A/V input cables put in the glovebox so id be able to hook up anything but id want to hook up the PS2 Slim. id get the FM Modulator installed so i could hear the sound of the ps2 and the great thing is that the ps2 will double as a DVD/PS2/CD/MP3 player which is a A+++++++++++++++++.

now onto my questions.

i am stumped on which FM Modulator to get, i don't want to lose XM and the blitzsafe from what i have heard dosn't work with the 04 Navi TL and along with that i have an FM Modulator for my IPOD which cost $75 and ive seen FM Modulators that are for 50 dollars and if the sound for movies is going to not that great i was wondering if a more expensive one would give me better high end sound.

i was also wondering how well the PS2 Slim fits in the glovebox if it does fit in the glovebox at all. because if i were to get the wireless controllers there would be something i have to plug into the controller hub on the ps2 slim for it to connect and it would be sticking out would there be enough room for this because id love it if i could just close the glovebox and have that stealthy look.

also if i WERE to hook up a ps2 slim what kind of hook-ups and alternators and such, as i am retarded when it comes to wiring and electronics, would i have to buy anything else to hook up the PS2 or can i just fuse it to the battery?

i hope i can do this...

Can't comment on ALL of this BUT..

I HAD FM modulator, but it sucked.. I mean big time and I got a pretty decent one and i lose reception EVERYWHERE.. Wide open areas no sound. I changed to everey station imaginable nothing. So I had my installer splice into the XM input and basically it's half volume (I have a system so it' s not a big problem), and I just flip a switch to hear the sound.

The PS SLim will fit, no mod needed.

Your alternator is fine.. You will need a power converter for the PS though.

Hi there!

Check out my install. I have a lot of what you're thinking of doing.

I have a PS/2 slim in my glove compartment and it fits well. I had to modify the transceiver for the wireless controller though cuz the glove compartment wouldn't close otherwise. I don't have pics of that on my website yet, but I'll take some.

But I have pics of a lot of other stuff, and you can see it all on there.

I'm in Canada, so I used the Blitzsafe adapter since I don't have XM... so I can't help you with the FM modulator stuff.

If you have any specific questions, let me know.

Good luck!

The PS2 slim fits with the Logitech wireless controller cost a bit more but the receiver is smaller so you can close the glove box. You just have to cut a small hole for the wires to come in from the back. You can even put the controller on top the ps2 and close it after.

I copied Zax123’s setup. I asked him your same question a few months ago and he walked me threw the whole thing. Big help. Thanks again Zax123.

My new line to my passenger. “Can you grab the map out of the glove box” as they open it “Oh wait never mind I have Navi” they come back with “You have a F#@king PS2 in your glovebox” the only time this backfired was “Wow yours is smaller then mine”

ive got most of this thought out, because i can basically just have the Navi to Video thing installed before time and when i have enough money get the PS2 Slim and controllers. i don't want to splice into the XM radio as i like XM unlike others, so i figured an FM Transmitter would be good, i have the one for my ipod made by apple and i don't really have any problems with it.

also....as for the POWER CONVERTER GOES...do i get one that converts into just a normal outlet? and i can plug everything in there? how much do u think it would cost for a body shop to install a NAVI to VIDEO unit and a power converter, and to have Audio/Video outputs so i can just plug the PS2 in

I used an inverter for the PS2. The soundstream AV switcher and NaviPlus unit and LCD headrest screens use standard 12V so no conversion needed there.

btw just to clarify. I STILL have my XM.. I just flip a switch to hear the XM when the switch is OFF and when the switch is ON I hear the DVD audio..

I still have my xm audio and love it too.. that is why I spliced into it.

Good luck and post pics..

but isn't the volume also affected? im the type of person that likes to listen to loud music and usually has it at level 25 and if my volume was affected it would probably bother me if its really affected. but i am also trying to look at how much this whole installation fee might be...can anyone help me out here?

FYI --

For those of you using the new slim PS2 in the car, Intec now has a 12v cigarette lighter adapter that eliminates the need for an inverter when powering the slim PS2.

That's nice because you can cut the plug off and run the wires to switched power like at the ignition harness. That way you have a nice clean install and you don't have to see that hideous plug. Also that's less wires you have to run for the inverter too.

Not sure which one is the 2nd Gen. But I do have the ps2 slim in the glove box and the logitech controller fits right on top of it. I also have room for my av/switcher controller beside the ps2.

I forgot to add that I have pretty good sound with my DEI/Directed FM Modulator. Some DVD's play really really clean while others I seem to get some static in high bass areas.

Mike, question for ya... do you have room to put a memory card into your PS2? I don't... if you do, I need your secret!! Can you maybe post a pic of your glovebox install? My PS2 is all the way to the back so I don't know how to get more room in there...

Lemme know, thanks!

Hey Rob, sorry I was out camping all weekend I'll try and get a pic this week. I haven't tried the memory card yet, but I don't think it will fit.

Mike,

OK cool, I guess I'll have to mod my memory card too.

This week I'm going to try modding my PS2 Slim... gonna be tough.

I think a lot of us that have done the conversion have done it ourselves. Prices will definitely vary depending on where you go though. Under the seat will be a pain in the ass to get too and it might get kicked if people are sitting back there a lot.
