Looking to put in a remote start...do I need the security system as well?

I want to put a viper remote start in my 05 TL. The one I'm looking at is the 5301. They sell a 5701 version as well that comes with an alarm system for like $50 more. Do I need that or is the system in the stock TL good enough.

And I do know that no matter what you do someone can get around your security system and steal your car...

stock system is just fine... only thing an aftermarket is gunna add is louder, more "melodic" sounding alarm, vibration/shock sensor, optional motion sensors (dunno if this is an option on the DEI products), and starter-kill, and 2-way paging that'll alert you (within the range of the alarm system) if someone has broken into your vehicle and what zone has been breached.

I think it's all dependant on what you wish to accomplish and what you think your "threat" is. If you've been satisfied with the acura oem alarm, just get and install the remote starter withOUT the alarm... use the $50 for a window-roll-up module

Go for the Viper. I am considering the same (5901 though) for the shock sensor,2-way paging and remote start features.

Where are you getting it installed ?

With the Viper, its a lot more sensitive than the factory (sensors). In addition, if you get the dual zone proximity sensor, when someone tries to look inside your window, it will trigger a warn away response.

vibration sensors can be annoying for neighbors as they can be set of by low frequency vibration: anything from the low rumble of a car with a loud exhaust, thunder, a big trunk driving by, etc. they are adjustable to some degree, but the less sensitive they are, the less effective they are for deterring thieves.

I'm going to get it installed at Best Buy. Normally I wouldn't, but the installer seemed very knowledgeable and has worked on TL's before. I'll double check on the vibration sensitivity though.

I've heard of drunk people beating your car up just to hear it talk to them before...

omelet1978 - Lucky you. My best-buy installer did not do a TL before..so I'm not 100% confident going with them. I will check other stores in the Cincinnati area. Also are you considering the "dual zone proximity sensor"?

TacaoBell - Does the "dual zone proximity sensor" come as a part of the 5901 or is it an add-on?
Anyone ??

I would love to scare a nosy guy away :-)

If best buy wants to charge you extra to hook up the proximity sensor, you can do it yourself. The proximity sensor is very easy to install on any of the viper responder units. It just plugs into the port next to the heavy gauge remote start wires.

yes just get it. an OEM alarm really only goes off if you unlock the doors without the key. make sure they run the wire into the door like a professional. they need at least one wire in the door to deactivate your factory alarm for the remote start. prox sensors will be very annoying i can nearly guarantee you (or your neighbors) will hate it eventually. just my .02

not necessarily; Honda/acura have a blue or black wire in the door at the door lock that's usually pretty finicky, it requires a solid ground signal, about 500ms in length to disable the alarm, but NOT unlock the doors.

Problem is, it works about 80% of the time, to the point where I have just installed remote starters in hondas and acuras with unlock-remote start-relock_after_started. The same blue or black wire that takes the ground signal to disable the alarm, also can take a 750ms or longer ground signal and it'll unlock the door. Therefore, an unreliable ground pulse may at times not disable the alarm and the r/s brain will attempt remote start and the OEM alarm will go off. Very annoying.

I totally agree with proximity sensors... you'll be the target of every malingering teen in the neighborhood, egging on your car to "warn" them away.

OEM security is really designed to not prevent the vehicle from being driven off, and it does a great job at that with the immobilizer. As far as someone breakin into your car to jack something in the glove box, armrest of or sitting on the seats, I agree, OEM security is weak.
