Is it just me or our speakers aren't that loud?
I turned my volume all the way to 40, and it's not really loud compare to bose systems.
Am i just deaf or our speakers just suck? And if it does suck, what are my options? I heard i can hook up an aftermarket amp, but i wouldn't be able to have subs.
What is the cheapest option where i can have bass and loud clear sound?
Or should i just go the expensive route and change out all the speakers and just use the amp for the sub?

For me, it is loud enough and I think it's way louder and more bassy than the bose system in my previous 01 CLS. You may look into upgrading the speakers to aftermarket ones?

You are not alone. I agree with ball4lyfe; just upgrade the system if it not up to your standards.
There are several threads on aftermarket speakers, amp, and sub setups.
Here is a recent thread. Many more with a search!

I generally keep the volume below 7, although I've turned it up to 20 for short periods. The bass in my TL seems to be pretty good too; I set the subwoofer at between neutral and -2. This is with the radio on FM or XM- generally dance stations 80 BPM or 81 The System.
I don't know if CDs and DVDs require higher volume settings on the TL system (like they do on home DVD/CD players) as I don't play discs on the TL, but that might explain why OP sets his at 40.
Maybe I'm too old and unhip for this discussion, as I hate having volume so high I can't hear environment outside the car when the windows are down...

When I listen to the Link Park Reanimation DVD-A, 12 is my max as it is quite loud already. However, in my other car, I have Rockford components for fronts and rears, dual 10" subs and 2 amps. One for the regular speakers and one for the sub. I usually have it blasting until the bass hits so hard everything rattles and it's hard to breath. But now I don't listen to it that loud anymore. I guess I'm just getting older.

I had Memphis audio speakers installed in my TL and the sound is real crisp and loud. I've been looking for a compact sub that can fit in space that the stock sub is but haven't had to much luck. The height/depth of the sub is not that tall, so it's not that easy to find an aftermarket sub to fit in there. I have a 10 in. sub in my trunk and it sounds wonderful. The only problem is that the TLs trunk is kinda small so you'll lose even more trunk space. But if you don't care for trunk space you're good to go.

Oh well, perhaps it's my age, but listening to your TL radio at such a high volume can't permit you to hear other things going on around your car.

I completely agree. So much for "premium" audio. I used to have a pair of 10" in my trunk and the music was awsome. I am afraid of loosing the 5.1 quality if i do any upgrade. going to do more research and save some money so i can have some REAL music soon. NO GUYS WE ARE NOT DEAF.. we just like LOUD music
hehehe

I honestly can't believe that to some people 12 is a high volume for either CD/DVD-A, radio or XM. I constantly have mine between 20-38. With the windows down you can't even hear the nuiances (sp?) of the music if it's below 20.
Now having said that, this is not the loudest stock system I have ever heard but it is one of the cleanest. There aren't many other vehicles I've been in where you CAN turn the volume to it's peak and not have much audible distortion. The lack of volume has nothing to do with the speakers, but how the system is tuned. Acura went for sound quality over distorted loudness.
It's all just a matter of taste. If you are a music lover, my bet is you have the system at higher volume and need it that way to appreciate the music. Some people would rather hear the outside. Not me!
