Help: Valentine 1 radar custom install

Hello

I'd like some help from people with LED and/or electrical systems knowledge.

I've been using the V1 for many years now and I've hardwired it to the fuse box using the tap-a-circuit adapter. Very easy, especially for someone with little knowledge of auto electrical systems.

I'm planning on buying the remote display and remote audio. I’ll put the radar to the right of the rear view mirror. I don’t want to install the display in the ashtray area, I like to keep it closed. I was thinking about taking apart the remote display box to see if there would be some way to remount the leds and use different color leds. I dont know exactly what I'd like to do yet, but I’d like to hear if anyone else has any ideas.

First, how difficult do you think it would be to open up the remote display and play around with the leds? Have you heard of anyone who has done this? I am aware of the company that does the stealth install into the mirror, and I’d like to do something like that but into the dash. Also, I’d like to put the mute button somewhere near the shifter or heater seats control, is that possible? Without knowing what’s inside, can I assume that I could run some wire from the switch to the main unit?

Second, I’d like to take apart the remote volume so that I can install the volume switch into the dash. I’ve seen some other website that explain how to do this.

I’d like to know if this is possible before I buy the remote units, any advice and/or links would be appreciated. Thanks.

PS: I've searched and read the other posts on this site.

Thanks bob, I haven't seen that one before. Amazing.

I skimmed it and that seems like the type of things I want to do. I'm going to read it again and I'll post my plans once I figure it out. I'll photoshop my idea and let me know what you think. Seems that taking apart the remote display wont be that bad.

Anyone know how to find the correct colored replacement leds? One of the pics on the porsche DIY site shows what the leds look like.

Thanks for the link, that's great stuff.

Sorry I haven't had a change to get this done, but I've been busy.

I finally checked with Acura and the black trim that goes around the gauges is only $27 so I'll be picking one up so I can cut into that without worrying about making mistakes.

I haven't taken my remote display apart but it seems from all of the pics I've seen, it will be difficult for me to install all the leds from the remote display.

So my plan is to install only the directional arrows and the bogey counter.

If possible, I might do 1 red, yellow, and green led to represent the signal strength.

If possible, I will tap the Green led into the 1st led (lowest strength indicator) and the Yellow somewhere in the middle, and the Red led towards the highest. I don’t know If I can do this, but I'll look into it.

I will not bother with the radar band indicator because I usually can tell by sound.

My other project is to install a Mute button or vol control, but I still need to do some additional research.

Thanks again.

-Andy

P.S. I have a photoshopped pic of what I'm trying to do, but I can't find the direction to post the pic from my computer.

That would be sweet if you can make it look like that. It's pretty simple to open up the V1 remote display. Two T7 screws holds it together, you can use a small screwdriver to open it up if you don't have a T7 screwdriver.
