DVD-Audio and Group Selection
DVD-Audio and Group Selection
Most DVD-Audio disc have multiple groups of tracks for instance
group 1 contains 5.1
group 2 contains dts
group 3 contains dolby surround sound
On some DVD players remote there is a 'group' button which allows you to select the different groups.
I can create a DVD-A disc with 99 tracks in 1 group and it plays fine in the TL and I can cycle through the tracks but to reach track 50 I have to hit next track 49 times.
I create another DVD-A disc with 6 groups containing about 16 tracks each, but the TL only sees the first group of tracks and I can't get to the other groups.
It's there a way to do group selection on the TL sound system?

Search for "DiscWelder" in this forum and you'll find a bunch of info on how to make your own DVD-A's.
Mike
I have a friend who is really into dvd creations and has the software to author them from scratch. All I can say is that it took us days to create one dvd-audio. Both of us are old school and we do things the long hard way.
The easiest and probably the least expensive way to to use 'Discwelder'. Like 'svtmike' said do a search for 'Discwelder' on the forum for more info.

A joke I think you downloaders of music from the internet will enjoy:
Why has Steely Dan sold over 5 millions CD's?
Answer: Because the people that listen to their music are over the age of 50 and don't know how to download music.
I have a few donwloaded CD's and the quality is inferior to any of my CD's. They actually degrade after a few listens and begin to start skipping. Do you folks have this these problems?

At what speed did you burn the CD?? I find that anything over 4x will give me problems in the long run.

That's very interesting. Never knew about the "group" in DVD-A discs. I can't find any group(s) on the Acura DVD-A demo disk that came with our cars. Anyone know if there are more than 1 group on that disk?
Anyway, that is the only DVD-A disk I have right now, & even without the group(s), I'm already sort of confused between chapters/titles & tracks. When that demo disk is played in my computer systems, using WinDVD, & my home DVD players, it is referenced by chapters & titles, & you can see the graphics (it'll be great if you can see these on the NAVI screen); when played in the car, it is referenced by the track #'s listed on the back of the Jewel box. As far as I know, there's no standard cross reference between these 2 systems. By trial & error, I found out on this demo disk, Chapter 1 titles 1 - 14 = tracks 8 - 21 (music selections); title 15 = track 1 (intro); title 16 = tracks 22, 23 (5.1 sys check); title 17 = track 24 (DVD-A in TL); title 18 = track 25 (TL adv tech in-depth). Chapter 2 goes to the main menu. There're also some graphics only selections (FAQ/Bio/Credits) which don't belong to any chapter/title. Eventhough our car DVD-A player can only play from GROUP 1, Tracks 2 - 5 (compare CD-A & DVD-A) on the demo disk which we can select & listen in our car stereo sys, can not be found when played in my home players or thru computer sys! Has anyone noticed this?

jshih57,
You are confused because your PC and home system are likely reading from and playing back the DVD-V tracks on the DVD disc.
On all DVD-A discs, there is the "DVD-Audio" track that DVD-Audio enabled players can read and playback as well as a "DVD-Video" track that all DVD players can read and playback.
The DVD-Audio track is the hi-rez track encoded with MLP lossless compression, and only outputable via the 6 analog outputs of a DVD-Audio enabled DVD player (and TL system).
If you listen to the output of a DVD-A disc via digital output (or on a PC), you're going to be hearing the content stored on the DVD-V track of the same disc.
Why so confusing? They put DVD-V and DVD-A tracks on the same disc to make all DVD-A discs backward compatible with every DVD player made. Here's how:
If your DVD-A disc only had DVD-Audio tracks, then when you put it in your PC or home DVD player that was hooked up for home theater usage (digital connections, etc.), it wouldn't work. Because most home and PC DVD players are not yet compatible or setup to work with the DVD-A track, this would be a very hard sell to consumers.
The thought is: people can listen to the songs on their normal DVD players now, and if they want to hear the super high quality version that's on the DVD-A side of the disc, then at some point they can upgrade to a DVD-Audio player and hook up the 6 analog cables directly to their receiver (or listen to it in their new TL!).
Hope this helps. I know it's confusing.

push and hold the 2 lefmost small round buttons (don't remember their label) under the cassette deck for few seconds. You'll ear a beep to confirm group change.

My bad I realized just after posting... I tought : how could someone don't now how to change group after 3 years? That was my brain cramp for today!
BTW Mr. President, I'm not new to discussion groups, relatively new to this one but I'm usually not posting for nothing; searching or replying to help others. That's why I don't have a lot of post.
Cheers.
