Custom Sub Box

Hello!

I've been looking for a project and I had a really old PG Xmax 12" sub laying around and I figured I could make a custom box that would fit in the side of the trunk. Luckily I had a lot of fiberglass cloth left over from my college days a decade ago . It turned out better than I expected and sounds pretty good. It's powered by a 300 watt (rms @ 4 ohm) pioneer monoblock and I grabbed the signal from the stock 8" woofer. Still need to find a good place to put the amp, it's currently velcro'd to the floor heh. It's plenty loud for me.

I probably put in about 15-20 hours over a 2 week period after the kids went to bed. If I have the energy I'm going to re-carpet it in the future as there are a few spots that I could do better. Missing are pics of the bondo work and extensive sanding to get the surface ready for carpet The entire interior is matted with dynomat as is the trunk (I forgot to take pictures). No rattles that I can hear either inside or outside of the car. I am really pleased with how it came out overall!

Looks good! I am about to do a full system in my 06. I can't decide what to do with a sub yet and I really like your side mount. That looks like the best option to keep trunk space.

Wow - I wish I had fiberglass skills like these! I spent $200 a few months ago for a used box like this, and I know the original owner paid $350. Looks awesome - great job!

Thanks! What does your box look like? I'm interested to see where they put the speaker inputs and how far they went towards the front of the car.

Awesome job, I see a problem with the box, its not enough of layers of glass, also, looks like some parts of the box are weaker than others, due to fabrication... Hope this box is solid. When the sub plays and creates pressure snide of enclosure, and the box isn't strong enough, it will flax and you will lose performance of the sound quality output, eventually it will fall apart...
Just to give you an idea

Its not hard at all to do a job like this, All you need to do, is tape everything off, make sure that there wont be any stains on the carpet or car its self from resin, and fiberglass,
I used Solarez Rasan for mine, it cures in 5 minutes, under UV sun light.

You will need to make a sub ring or buy it form ebay created for your sub woofer, and few other material.. What will cost you the most your spend time, and effort of how you want it to look. Im finishing mine, I will post pics in my 07 TL custom system there.. once is fully completed, granted I will have a crazy sub in my box, over 35LB which it will be of both worlds, spl, and sound quality, ... about 2500 w rms, at the sub alone not including 3 way set up front.

OP sorry for going crazy at your thread, you did a good job...

No problem, it's certainly not perect . I left off a lot of the steps where I layer multiple layers of additional fiberglass. In the end the box was probably 25 lbs without the sub (with the sound deadening). I layer extra layers where the edges of the mold met the front of the box. It ended up being 3/8 to 1/4 inch thick overall with no flex that I could discern.

I'm certainly not pushing the type of power you are so hopefully it will hold up. I've been driving with it now for a few weeks and so far it's working great!
