i sold a couple of sets of diamond S600 comps and all my buyers loved them. they dont cost 400 dollars (retail) a set for nothing.
alpine makes shitty comps. the type x pro's are decent but for the 350 price tag i'll get something from the rainbow/hertz/polk line.
i won't get into jl audio.

From that list i've had the type r and the diamond d662a. they were both passive setups powered by a jbl 300.4. the alpines had alrite midbass but the tweeters were extremely harsh and caused ear fatigue quickly. the diamonds i used were complete crap. no midbass whatever(even bridged) and the tweets sucked. we all know sony makes crappy car audio stuff so no explanation there. JL audio makes nice subs/amps but i've never liked the comps or their prices. i'm not one of those who goes off word of mouth, i give everything a listen then base my opinions.
so what crossover points have you had them set as? that is very hard for me to believe all this.

I had Infinities and while the mids were ok, the tweeters were very harsh.
I'm currently running the ID CTX65cs and could not be more happy. Tons of midbass and tweeters that are detailed but not harsh. I can hear sounds that I didn't hear with the Infinities. I can listen to them turned up for hours without fatiguing my ears. For the price I don't think you'll find better. I'm running higher than the recommended rms to them and somtimes run them full range with no problems, far past where the Infinities would bottom.

I agree 100% w/ eggy on this. I absolutely LOVE Rainbow comps...there whole line-up is full of GREAT speakers. The pioneer 720prs is an awesome "budget" set...can hang w/ plenty of comps twice the price. They really shine when they're run active.
+1 to you kind sir...
what type of music do you listen to matt05tl? that is one of the most important question that nobody in there right mind has asked!!! second volume...how loud do you listen to it?...u willing to go custom on speaker installation options? ie tweeters on the pillar...door panel...custom kicks...or craptacular OEM location...

Dynaudio's perform VERY well off-axis...a friend of mine who sells Dyanudios told me that I should make a briaxal bracket for them and run the tweeters in the doors. Its pretty pointless to run tweets from a comp set in stock locations (especially on the driver side). Nice a-pillar pods would work well. I've actually made some out of heavy-weight strofoam and covered them in bondo. Fiberglassing > me
Alot has been said.
The speakers can be an elusive item to decide on. First of all, there are literally hundreds of good speakers out there. Most people don't notice the difference between the high-end speakers and a mid-level pair, especially if they're accompanied by other good equipment.
Dealer soundboards are a nice concept, but they rarely convey what the speakers will sound like in your vehicle. I recommend that you try to audition some speakers in another vehicle and see if you are happy with the way they sound. Try to listen to them "flat un-equlized".
I've known plenty of people to purchase what they read was the best thing to buy or what was recommended to them, only to regret spending too much money after they installed them.
All of the named manufacturers make good speakers. and all of them make cheap version as well. that does include sony as well.
The differences really come down to taste, and most importantly the instalaion as well. What I think sounds good may not make someone else happy. It's YOUR "EAR" and you're the final judge.
Take the time to actually listen to some of your potential choices and make a decision. After you've spent some time with your new speakers if you're still not happy, then welcome to the world of audiophiles. We're never happy!

they have. but your right about alpine. i think its all about preference because i heard some polk audio subs in my friend's car and they sounded like garbage. maybe it was just that model, who knows. however, others might like polk audio and thats understandable. its all about preference.
