taco, here you go:
its not much to look at right now, but i plan on making a psuedo sub enclosure for it using a speaker grill for ventilation. i got the carpet, grill, and the clips, just need the time.
we're working on a couple other things right now, most importantly, an RSX-S install - almost done.
oh yeah, and the computer is wired into the ignition with a startup shutdown controller, so it will automatically start up when the car starts, and automatically shutdown after 10 seconds when the car is turned off.

Question 1. Can I use the laptop to just go to power save mode on battery?
Question 2. Why not just use a small laptop instead of building a mini computer?

a. Generally speaking you can build one for approximately 7-800 for a basic carpc
b. GPS included, bluetooth, wireless internet (tethering from phone or broadband card)
c. built in HDD, so music files are endless
d. load movies, adapt to any mp3 player
if I missed anything chim in!

I'm not looking for a crazy system, just something to get navi, backup camera, iPod, Bluetooth and audio.

Nice work!
I'm about to get a 05 non Navi and would like more info on:
1) Doing this myself, to include
A) parts
B) step by step
C) options to consider
This subject/post seems to scad er info and not list all to well.
2) Having it all done by you
3) Or a local installer doing it if anyone or you know of a local installer to the Buffalo NY area that can do it please send me details.
4) Time frame needed if I have you do it, which will be me driving my car to your location and staying till it's done.
I fix computers and just about any thing that handles paper for a living so I have the hands and mind to be able to do it...just not sure if I want to myself. I could even help you do it for me if thats a option that will help both of us and lower the costs.

The more I think about this and not wanting to reinvent the wheel myself to make it possible. Seems like a touch screen ran to a device like a netbook or a notebook may do basically the same thing. Could even hook up a RF wireless mouse that you can turn on and off at will.

Guys,
Sorry, I haven't been checking in lately.
To answer some of the questions above.
-To power on/off you'll need a DC/DC regulartor - we used a Carnetix P2140
-The LCD is a Xenarc 700TSV
-There are no gaps in the bottom of the display mount. Used black rubber tubing to seal.
-For sound we used a PIE X3, though you can find newer better Aux adapters now
-You can certainly use a small laptop, but 1 you're wasting a screen and two, you're limited in HD space in a 2.5.
-As for the benefits, a double DIN unit can't even compare to a CarPC
Here's a link to our free FrontEnd that we wrote. Features are listed:
http://www.drivendynamics.com/shotgun.features.html
Last point. If you can solder you can probably do this.

Just a idea to add this to the device

I have no idea how or if it's possible just like the idea of it may be and some one may want to look in to making it possible.

This can be used with our frontend in seconds. There's an option to embed any external application within Shotun! for easy integration into the system. It works with any application from Notepad, to Solitaire, to Office. It'll most certaily work with any radar dector package or any lighting & siren control modules. (We've tested it.)
Had a video of it in action, but can't seem to find it ATM.

I know this is an old thread but this setup is amazing ! I just bought an Pioneer AVH-P 4300 DVD 7in' unit ....I hope he can do the same setup for me . I've seen others that had their setup towards the bottom . IMO this looks much cleaner and screen would be ideal at that level . I am trying to find an converter that can convert mini hdmi cable to video . So I can use my EVO 4g from it . Unfortunately this HU is only iphone compatible at the moment

Just read this whole thread...great help..I'm going to do this but with an ipad mini instead of a computer. Just needed the details about relocating the screen.
I just am going to use the instructions on relocating the stock display. It seems the pictures don't work anymore. I know this is an old thread, but is there any place I can view some pictures of the relocation that could help?

Would love to see this done with an iPad. Let me see if I can get the pic links working again...

Where do you live? Here in MD, my brother and I used to do it at our car shop. Did quite a few actually; TLs, Corvettes, 350/370zs, various Hondas, etc. We sold the business to our employees last year though, but where there's a will, there's a way.
