A few pop to mind.....

The old Hooes Road east of Rolling Road in Springfield, Virginia (runs parallel, sort of, to the Franconia-Springfield Parkway)--NO traffic since they opened the six-lane parkway, and lots of sharp turns with a wooden bridge.

VA-231 between Gordonsville and Keswick. Not completely twisty, but enough that you can push the limits of your car's adhesion on a few of the curves. I had a few near misses in college days!

Any of the roads that lead to Clifton, Virginia. Those roads are a Fairfax County from a different era. Once my TL's break-in period is done I have to take it out there; Fairfax Station Road may be the best one for this purpose. Pope's Head Road used to be the best until they stuck a traffic light on it. Compton Road would be a good one too except that you get too many high school kids who do not know how to push the limit safely.

This is Chicago. We don't have hills of any consequence. We don't have twisties. When we fly somewhere that has twisties, we end up in Cavalier rental cars.

In Northern California - Highway 29 heading south to Calistoga (north end of the Napa Valley) or Highway 20 between Willets and Fort Bragg (primeval redwood forest). In Southern California - Highway 74 heading south into Palm Desert (extreme switchbacks) or Highway 74 (again) between the Orange County line and Lake Elsinore, for a longer mountain run. California has dozens if not 100s of excellent twisty runs; everyone here will have their favorite(s). Nobody asked, but for high-speed runs, I haven't found a better stretch than Highway 93 in northeast Nevada between Wells and Jackpot

In the bay area..off of 680..in Milpitas..you take Calaveras (sp?) rd. A lot of people i know go there whenever and just race up and down that place..but i must say..it gets damn dangerous at the end..no protection from falling off the cliff...and that certain part of the cliff turns into a very narrow 1 1/2 lane..it ain't all that big. I drove my 2002 tl-s there one night..at like...5 AM..and it took me 1/2 hour to get to the very end...and well..i was a pussy so i didn't try shit haha. Also..it's like a backroad to a totally different area of milpitas. It's like run down houses/shacks/farmland...it's actually quite scary going there at night. One of my friends had stopped there and some guy actually came out with a gun. Luckily my friend still was in his car lol. But also..there are hella cops there now since hella people go there during daytime to race.

Oh Hell Yes!!! This one is awesome!

There are so many great roads in the Sierra foothills. Awesome twisties. The scenery and views are great. A lot of fun small towns to stop in. Great diners. Indian casinos. All the makings of a great day!

Actually..if you take Calavaras coming from 680 towards San Jose...you would end up making a left and just going straight down the road past all the stop lights until you hit the farmlands..then..there will be a 1 lane road (1 going one way..while the other goes the other way) which looks as though it leads you up to the hills. YEp...when you go through it..you get to see what's behind the mountain...and it feels like a hella long path leading somewhere far..but it only leads you to San jose into the rich ass houses "backway" in the very end lol...

Oh yea..what city is lombard st. located in?

svtmike,

You should take road trips to Wisconsin! Around Devil's Lake State Park in Baraboo, WI, there's some great curvy roads!

There are so many in Colorado, it's hard to pick just one. But since I live near Denver, the Peak to Peak Highway comes to mind first. It's between Central City and Estes Park.

I've read about it on the Temple of VTEC. Always wanted to test out my car there.

I love driving in Colorado. Too bad my experiences have been limited to a Buick Century and a Ford Taurus .

Independence Pass, Loveland Pass, Trail Ridge Road, Mt. Evans are all fun and have tremendous views.

Highway 101 is great driving and a great trip too. Takes about 3 days to drive it and there are nice stops along the way.

It gets pretty twisty and the ocean view is awsome, just don't stare at the views when your trying to drive or you might roll of a cliff.

To 1995hoo;

Don't forget Bristow Road (route 619 between Brentsville and it's junction with 234 East.

For another thrill, try the Difficult Run side of 193. That'll test you. Pope's Head and Farifax Station Roads were great in the 60's. Too much out there now.

Easy - the back way to Roanoke, Virginia, through the foot hills of the Blue Ridge mountains. Miles of rising and falling whoop-de-doos and switchbacks, blind corners that test your ballz, and few guard-rails to keep you from plummeting in thick forest (as in driving off the mountain).

I have also been known to terrorize Route 711 heading west into Powhatan County, past Lee's last camp before Appomatox. A skirmish between yours truly in an NSX-T and a poser in a late-model Porsche ended in a bit of a lesson in oversteering disaster for the German stud. Oopsie. (in a David Spade voice).

So you know, when Chevrolet introduced the C6 recently, those were the same roads they used for the Press Corps.

There's a real nice 110 mile drive around the Great Smokey Mountains and Lake Fontana in Tenessee that I drove many years ago. Bet it's still a good one.

So true, SB. But I have had some hellacious (good Rebel term) drives with some of the Vette guys on the Angeles Crest in California - canyon driving is cool because of the vistas and the sounds, especialy with a honkin V8, in this case, a Lingenfelter* 383 stroker. Ahhh.

*Rest in Peace, JL - you are missed - you made bulletproof engines, had an engineer's mind (Penn State degreed) and a driver's skill, and that famous "Wolf-Eye" of yours stared down many an opponent. Callaway only wishes he could make engines that reliable, and with all that money from his Daddy to boot.

North of Chicago, through the town of Glencoe or maybe it's Winnetka... Sheridan Road. It's really short, but there was some nice curves and hill elements to the stretch of road. As long as you're not stuck behind a slow car, it's amazing. I'd love to take the S2000 down it at night. And you can continue south, and drive along Lake Michigan using Lake Shore Drive, perfect on a warm summer night.

Out past all the suburbs, near my place in Barrington, there are some fun roads too. Sometimes I find them by accident as I'm just driving aimlessly.

Head out down Henderson Rd...be careful if you decide to go through Clifton because of the cops. I got a ticket there 2 years ago. If you're ever a little further south (around Dumfries) hit up Joplin...now THAT road is scary as hell!! (look it up on the NAVI if you're wondering where it's at)

Route 97 through "Hawks Nest" just north of Port Jervis, NY. Multiple switchbacks perched over the side of a cliff, overlooking the Delaware River far below. Several TV commercials have been filmed there. Drive it without touching the brakes!

Oh, yeah!

1) the coastal highway (101) in California that rides the cliff edges on the way north to Monterey.

2) Route 189 from Orem, Utah through the Provo canyon, past Robert Redford's place (Sundance) to Heber, then on to Park City.

Recently paved, usually light traffic (except on weekends), wide lanes, frequent passing zones, threading through mountain vistas, lightly patrolled, past several lakes- and some five mile straightwaways for testing the top end.

3) the road to the top of Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondak Mountains in upstate NY. New pavement, severe chicanes, precipitous drop-offs- not for the faint-of-heart.

XP (who just did #2 several times in the last couple of weeks)
