When Did VTEC Start?

Have all Acuras had VTEC engines, or did this technology come later in the Acuras life? I recall the first Legends with a large V on the trunklid. Did this refer to VTEC or a V-6 engine? Thanks.

VTEC started on Honda F1 race engines in the 80s. The Acura NSX was the first car with VTEC in 91. The early Acuras did not have VTEC.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VTEC

"The VTEC system was originally introduced as a DOHC system in the 1989 Honda Integra sold in Japan, which used a 160 hp (119 kW) variant of the B16A engine. The US market saw the first VTEC system with the introduction of the 1990 Acura NSX, which used a DOHC VTEC V6. DOHC VTEC motors soon appeared in other vehicles, such as the 1992 Acura Integra GS-R."

i believe nissan had a variable valve timing before Honda did. Back in the days of big blocks. Tuner companies came up with a cam with rubber lobes that would get bigger and more extreme as the revs raised. It proved to make power, but the rubber was inconsistent causing lots of problems. I guess that was an attempt at changing the valve sequence.

No kidding? Rubber lobes....thats wild! You can almost see where that would be problematic from the get-go with rubber being such a wear item. I gotta go see if I can find a pic of that....thats too crazy...would love to just see one!

I read about it in either GM High Performance one of the muscle car mags. They joked about them and said that they were the first form of variable valve timing. They musta tried everything back in the day just to make some power.
