What is this part?

Not sure what this part is, would someone be able to tell me? It is directly in front of the engine. it is smoking after I drive my 2008 TL s-type. I tried cleaning off some of the oil/grease on it but that did not seem to help. Otherwise the car drives fine.

It's the #7 front primary converter & #10 front LAF sensor on the link below:

You probably should check the valve cover gaskets, for potential replacement, to minimize further oil leakage.

Most likely valve cover leaking. That's what is smoking when it drips onto the hot primary cat.

i can't believe no one has mentioned this, but your valve cover is leaking, time to replace both front and rear valve covers. While you're in there, get the spark plug tube seals as well and do those along with the valve cover bolt washer/ seals

LAF... aka O2 sensor.. and don't LAF. haha
just for grins you might try to tighten the valve cover bolts. But I never did it before.. So I am just spouting off random thoughts

I am trying to get all six spark plug well gaskets off of my TL but they are so baked in there I have removed most of it but the part at the top or bottom, whichever one it is, will not come off. I tried softly with a small mallet and just tried a heating gun but neither will get them off.

Do you have any idea how to get the small amount remaining off?

Not ideal but i used a flat-head screwdriver like chisel to deform the seal and then knock it out
