Transmission Dice Roll….Is it possible?
I recently purchased an 05 TL for $500 listed as needing transmission. Everything else on the car was more than satisfactory so I figured it was worth a shot and at worse I’m out $500 and a little time. It would barely go into 1st gear when I got it and would not shift out of 1st. That was my starting point from which I drained trans fluid (TERRIBLE) and changed filter (TERRIBLE) but noticed no metal pieces on drain plug. I cycled 3 qts thru best I could and then drained that and replaced with a fresh 3qts(from dealership) and now it will shift throu all the gears when being very gentle on gas. If I gun it it seems to throw everything out of whack and it starts slipping bad. With the progress I’ve made is there any hope that this transmission could be saved? Has anybody had success doing this and could tell me where or what I need to do from here? At the very least right now I can drive it to the store as long as I’m gentle with it. Is there possibly something else going on with maybe the CV axles?

Drifting
Fluid, filter, and solenoids...that is about it. Anything else is a it works or it doesn't, no in between. If a CV were failed, the car wouldn't go anywhere at all. You can try replacing more of the fluid, but most likely the friction materials are going from the clutch packs at this point. These transmission aren't stout in the first place...one that has not been maintained is usually game over.
If the tach goes up, but the speedo doesn't, the transmission is slipping.
If the tach goes up, and the speedo goes up, the driveline is broken.
