TPM system. why just because its cold?

I was driving home tonight when my TPM system warned me that pressure was low but it only told me it was the front left tire when they all read 28 after checking. also the low tire light was on? anyone else have this problem?

I think you've got it. I don't know what the dealer recommended tire pressure is for your TL, but for mine, it's 35F, 32R. Once you adjust the tire psi, there should be no problem!

Tis the same for my TL-S MT. Filled up with air and no more message.

I didn't get a message yet, but I noticed that with the colder weather my tire pressure is a lot lower in the mornings.

I read somewhere that the pressure is 1psi lower for every drop of 10degrees. This seems to be holding out for me. I'll put a little more air in before the really cold weather hits.

Yeah the cold air does indeed drop your tire pressures, and this happens to all tires...simple physics. Funny thing is until TPMS you were blissfully ignorant of that. Now the car tells you it's freezing outside (as if you already didn't know!) and the tires need air. I monitor my tire pressure all the time and since I have a compressor in the garage, I adjust it at least once a month. I do that mostly because with the tight suspension on the TLS I can actually FEEL a 2 PSI drop or increase in the car's handling and ride, and it affects the MPG I get drastically. Air is cheap, gas is NOT.

With the change of seasons it's a good idea to check all your vehicle's tires because they all lose a few PSI this time of year if you live above the Mason-Dixon line.

In the wrong hands this thread could easily turn into a plug for "Nitrogen"...

Yea one of my tires reach 28 psi a few weeks back and the computer gave me a warning light. I'm glad it did because we found a nail in that tire later that day.

FWIW - I set pressure at 37F and 36R, this seams to mitigate getting too close to setting off the sensors due to temp changes... As the tires heat, they go up 2-3 PSI, well within spec, less rolling resistance and set for high-speed running almost anytime.

I had the same thing in my 2006 AT. It was unusually cold first thing in the morning here in L.A. and it alerted me to the front driver's side being low (28). But when I checked the monitor, the rear driver's side was actually lower! (26). After about 5 minutes of driving, they were all at 30 and 31.

*shrug*

Saw the same thing with my tires. Once the ambient temp was below 40F, my alert went off.

All tire pressure specs are with the tires cold. As people have pointed out, the pressure rises as the tire heats up due to friction.

My problem is that then I bring it home and it sits in a heated garage so if you fill them up it's too much then.

Approximately 1 psi drop in tire pressure for every 10 degree drop in ambient temperature.

Sorry for going off topic, but do you have a problem with your car prematurely rusting out?

I'd imagine they use salt in IL and putting a salty car in a heated garage is just accelerating the process.

Here is an old thread: TPMS is a bit annoying in cold temps

Please continue the discussion there. As for KN_TL's post, please respond via PM. Thanks.
