Tl Type S Brakes

hi all...

i had an '02 TL type "S" that went through rotors like crazy. Dealer told me i was using them too much i chalked this up to maybe the TL "S" having larger wheels and thus maybe more leverage to heat and damage the rotors? Anyway every 25K miles it was time to beg the dealer to good will them.

i know have a new TL Type "S" with 18" rims, anyone know how the brakes hold up over time?

Thanks!

Wheels don't cause your breaks to wear out faster. The mass of the vehicle far out weighs any difference in rotational mass. Combine a heavy car with aggressive sport brake pads, and your gonna eat rotors & pads VERY often. The new TL-S has the brembo front brakes with ceramic sport pads that are known to wear out rather quickly and eat rotors too. Especially if you brake hard & often. The previous owner of my 05 sport with the same brembos had the front pads replaced at only 19k miles...

I'm hoping my driving technique is a little more conservative since the best price on OEM front pads I've found are $140 and $130 each for rotors. You gotta pay to play...

There are better replacement rotors for the new cars, most cars for that matter!
OE does not mean best thing going- just best deal the car maker gets on something
They also have to compromise on how the car will be driven, so suitable brakes for most.

Bought a type S so you can drive Type A ness-?? get the upgraded parts!

P.S. Brakes are cheap compared to clutches and transmissions

Are you using the correct tool for the job?

The factory Brembo's with moderate to aggressive driving will last you about 40K miles.

I got that out of mine with fairly hard driving about 80% of the time, and I am coming from an S2000 with PowerSlot's and Hawk pads. The brakes on this car are definitely an upgrade to the stock S2 brakes, but keep in mind this is a car with about 700lbs on an S2000 (I'm assuming you have one) so get used to it first.

Once brakes are done, go with the Rotora Slotted Rotors and some ceramic pads, you wont be sorry....

You don't drive with both feet or anything do you? Shouldn't really burn up rotors, unless you drive like you're on the track or something?

I heard the ceramic pads are great for low dust, but don't stop as well, whats the best ceramic pad for both worlds. My TL-S wheels get quite dusty with the stock pads, even though the wheels are a dark color, they loose the nice shine once they are full of dust. Especially the drivers side.

The stock Brembo pads are Ceramic. Thats why they make so much dust. Every ceramic pad I've used makes WAY more dust than it's metallic counterpart. Especially the Axxis Ultimate ceramic/kevlar compound I have on the back of my Civic...

YAY!!!!

Haha....anyways, JD: The ceramics stop better, BUT they must be heat cycled first. When cold, they do have much less stopping power, but once they heat up, they are great!

As far as I know, the brembo pads are not ceramic.....they sure dust a crap load if they are. I have cut down brake dust by at least 75% with the full ceramics from rotora.....

YAH, I thought they WERE NOT ceramic like somebody else said. I read that ceramic make MUCH LESS dust but don't stop as good. I don't know what the other person is talking about. A friend of mine use to work on cars, and now does it on the side. He has put ceramic pads on many cars and said they make MUCH LESS dust then regular pads.

I beleive him because he's done a zillion cars. My neighbor had him put ceramic pads on his Lexus with 18" chromes and has MUCH LESS dust now.

ALRIGHTY THEN

Don't count it out until you know for sure what the OEM pads are made of. I have Axxis Ceramic pads on my Civic and they dust more than the TL's Brembo ones. The amount of dust depends completely upon the formulation of the pad compound.

not for nothing but ive used a couple of diff aftermarket pads myself and i thought it was great til they get eaten up a lil bit.... then u realize "shit these things really dont have the stopping power the brembos have" so im stickin to stock setup unless someone really does have one that stops like it and creates less dust.
