Angry TL hits a curb on ICY road:((

Hello all,
I was drink home from work today, my 2006 TL smashed with a curb. My car is still drivable with a 20 degree tile to the left side. I am wondering should I take it to my dealer (a Honda dealer, the closed Acura dealer is 60 miles away) or to let one of my friend fix it. Any suggestions will be hopeful. Thanks

Can’t really see the damage from the outside, but you can definitely see it from the inside or when I am driving it. Just got done talking to my insurance agent, I will definitely taking my car to a dealer now. My buddy owns a shop, but I think I will take it to a Honda dealer, since my insurance will pay for it. Thanks guys

Anybody has any idea how much something like this will cost, and how long will it take to fix? I need this car to go to work and I live 30 mins away.

ahh whats the signs of your car when your driving? i slid into a snowbank/hidden curb, crack a little piece of my rim offf, size of half a penny, got a wheel balance which helped made my driving alot smoother, my steerring wheel is still alittle off to the right side when pulling straight, after the snow goes away its time for a wheel alignment.

If you know a good body shop, take it to them. That's what the stealer's going to do anyway. Plus, a body shop will most likely be cheaper.

The car drives okay; the wheel is 20 degrees to the left side when I am driving it in a straight way. I have not noticed anything else yet. It happened at night I can’t not really tell what damage it might have done to my front bumper. I have a 250 deductable on my insurance. I think it will cost me more than that to fix the damage, am I wrong on that? So if that’s the case I will take it to a dealer. My buddy runs his shop at home; he used to fix my 02 Camry. He does a good job on it, but I am not sure my insurance will be paying for it if I am taking it to him! Base on my description, does it sound like an easy fix? I know nothing about fixing cars L

If the wheel/tire is out, it will take more than an alignment to correct, as part(s) are bent/distorted.
Ihatecars (Matt) hit a curb, as have others on this Forum, and I've seen other makes that severe damage was the end result, even some having sustained frame damage.
If the dealer has a body shop/frame rack, take it to them, or ask the insurance company for a list of choices.

your insurance company should cut you a check out...your supposed to get 3 qoutes and submit the qoutes...they should just cut the check out and than you can choose how you fix it...if you even fix it at all.

Im pretty sure its just needs an alignment, and also check the pressure in your tires. Usually after hitting a curb hard like that will affect your tires too. Your local trusted shop should be able to do it for around 50-70 dollars.

if ur wheel is turned like that then you got some serious damage there were a few guys in here that curbed their car and the repair cost was $5K cause the subframe and suspension got totally screwed up along with some unseen damage. I curbed my car and it pushed the passenger side of the car up when i went into the ditch and it was $5 to fix that and that was with the labor rate being $48/hr

Took my car to the shop this morning, the price I got from Honda was 778. I guess my left front wheel is really messed up, they told me the “tide rod” and rim has to be replaced, alignment have to be done too.
Since it’s a Honda dealer they have to order my Acura parts too, so it will take some time like earliest will be tomorrow afternoon or Friday. I will be responsible for 250, and rest will be picked up by my insurance.

I guess i got lucky, didn't have to pay 5K. thanks guys i will update after i get my car back.

tie rods are what connect the wheel to the steering- very important part and not a big deal to get or replace- also easily damaged in curb slaps

rim- bent- maybe they can get a used one but dealer will likely get brand new.
Alignment is needed after tie rod end installation- it should drive fine afterwards
You got major lucky on this one~

Have a read of the owner manual on traction control systems and go try them out in a safe place- the car will out-think and outdrive most people, especially if you dont know about the trick system integration of throttle and brakes with yaw sensors and ABS

Get the car inspected, you would be surprised at how some damage is not visible.

Dealer just called, still waiting for the front wheel. Still don’t have my car yet. For those people that have to drive in this terrible weather, please drive carefully.

Just got my car back from the dealer, 309.30 for labor, and 407.17 was for the wheel and tie rod. I had to pay 250, and my insurance covered rest of it. For the past 2 days I have been driving my moms’ IS250, and I have noticed TL has a lot of tore steering then IS250, plus Lexus handles better, what’s up with that?

Btw the Is250 does not handle better then the TL. Only reason u think it does bc of rwd, but infact it deosn't, plus u can go sideways and oversteer with easy throttle unless its the awd. With the tl u just understeer, and go str8 into a tree or curb

I and a couple of other forum members have had the same experience as you had, although my experience was almost 3 years ago.

You will need to replace the front subrame, along with that your front control arm (from the side that was impacted) and your bushings, and maybe the wheel baring although that's unlikely.

Btw it took a body shop to do a chassis alignment to realize the subframe was bent. It was bent over a couple MM and it caused the car to pull to the right.

I am VERY surprised that the dealer only replaced the tie rod and wheel, they should have done an alignment and when they proceeded to do that they would have noticed there was more damage that you can't visibly see.

Btw, when I had done this, my course of action was to replace the wheel, then I went to get a wheel alignment where I was told the suspension specs were completely out of balance and that the chamber and caster were off as well. Then I went to the dealer and they did their own alignment and then from there they went to a body shop to check the alignment on the subframe.

It took about 2wks.

if your camber and caster are out- there is something bent for sure!!!!

Not surprising the dealer did a shitey job- they replace tuneup parts not do frame straightening
BUT
they should have gotten an alignment- thats just crazy not to after damage and new tie rod mandates it
You should talk in person with the service MANAGER- if the Writer didnt follow through the boss needs to know
Such poor service is definetly less than perfect 10s on the customer survey .. acura demands of its dealers, the car should be right before it leaves and any questions answered

Yes it should have gone on the frame machine for inspection and measuring in the very beginning- its all lasers nowadays- and known the frame needed a little nudge or three

This is when insurance gets a call and approves more repairs

When its done-- take it to another shop for inspection

Get that fixed! And don't drive on it!!!

Let me guess, your rim contacted the curb? That happened to me with an older car. There was ice all over my street. I was trying to go around a bend in the road. I was only going 20 mph max, and was trying to turn away from the curb (following the road), exposing my rim straight on it. When I hit the curb, the rim slammed into it, and busted my camber and tie rod.

contact your insurance, and get your car towed to the nearest auto service garage. Good luck!

It is not really a small thing when the entire weight of the vehicle slams into the curb putting all of it's force onto the rim. You can expect to have numerous problems with the steering assembly.
