Tinting TL

i talked to a shop about tining my windows, was told that for TL the window guides need to have felt put on them so it wont scratch tint. They will need to take about door panels (additional charge).

can anyone comment on that? i have never heard of that being needed.

I am about to do this myself and I plan to install the moleskin to be safe. Some places will say it's not needed, which might be true, but it's cheap insurance.

I was quoted $20 additional for EACH window, and I'd have to supply my own. Fck d@. My tint was already $240, dont wanna spend $80+ more.

Confirmed. For our cars, it is DEFINITELY needed.

+1. I always wipe down the rubber seal on the door panel that touches the window every time I wash the car. Not sure if this helps any or not, but seems to work for me

I had it added for 20 for all the windows. Only cost me 200 to have all my windows tinted. They also did not need to pull the door panels, they just pulled the weather stripping and installed it.

Thats a great DIY---this job is not too difficult.
A few notes:
1) Be careful with the screw on the bottom rear of the front door panels with the rubber grommet. This screw is known to strip easily and is a pain when it does. If yours is not already stripped from the factory, take care that you don't strip it.
2) There is an alternate method that does not require removing the whole door panel. While many have complained that it damages the upper portion of the panel, it can be done. It did not damage my panels at all.
3) The glue from the moleskin will melt and cause streaks on the windows. Get a can of Goof-Off or Goo-Gone or similar to remove it safely.
4) Purchase kits from tintprotector.com---I believe they are a vendor here on AZ. Mention AZ and get a discount! Search the website for both install methods.

check your window blades, did the tint shop cut/trim them back when they installed your tints?

thats a possible 'solution' for some of them.

3) To avoid Glue streak do the single strip install. That is, instead of cutting the moleskin to fit each blade separately, don't cut it and install the whole strip over both robber blades on each window. Trust me, I had to install the moleskin three times to learn this, but it works!

4) you have the instructions on the link, its a real easy install, save yourself some $ and buy moleskin from empirepao - http://www.empirepao.com/?page=moleskin
They also have links to instructions on how to install on the provided link.

Other than that, I recommend installing moleskin, regardless. I had to replace my tints because I did not know about this. its a must in TL's. after moleskin, no more scratches

Good luck,

Rolan

So the tint shop that did my last car. (they did a really good job) said they Do TLs w/ out moleskin and have no problems. He even told that if it scratches their lifetime warranty will cover. Only downfall they only do metallic tint though.

anyone actually get metallic tint and can confirm if it messes up radio and navi?

I'd be interested to know if there is a difference between metallic vs. ceramic type of tint and it propensity to scratch without moleskin. I like lifetime warranties, but hate to have the car in the shop.

its not the rubber, its the dirt that gets trapped by the rubber. We have tighter seals than other cars to keep out wind noise, so any dirt that gets trapped in there is pressed against the window harder.

i had my car tinted without mol skin....got fucked up in 1 month
i had it retinted with mol kin and no problems at all....they use double stick tape to keep the mol skin intact so after a few weeks sometimes the glue from the tape gets onto the window from constant rolling up n down but all you need to do is take some rubbing alcohol and clean the tints....eventually the glue is completely dried out and ur windows stay perfect

most tint shops charge 10 dollars per window to add molskin and that includes the material
